AFR MOPAR 340 HEAD TEST!

-
For reference Dulcich build a stock bottom end 340 with X heads that made 400hp with the same cam about 20 years ago. Magazine article for Mopar Muscle if I remember right.
My reference to the dyno software above. Anyone that has built a 340 back then like that knows those values were puffed and the dyno operators admitted there was a glitch. Biggest bunch of BS article back then.

An xe268H in that set up is a 1ish hp/ci deal. You aren't getting 1.2out of it.

There were plenty of happy engines that never made the MPH at the track back then! I was involved with an engine that was at the puffer dyno and it got run on a different one a few days later. It was down a bit on hp (double digits) on the second one and ran the MPH consistent with the conservative dyno.

The TV guys are leading you down the garden path.
Watch Nick's Garage videos. Realistic values and he is not trying to sell you anything. Last one i watched was a
'71 340 rebuilt to stock specs. Made 281hp. The TV guys add an XE 268 cam and make 100 extra HP with a 340 that has less compression than a stock 340. OH MY!

Looking to see if dulcich snuck some nice machine work on the x heads in the article. Couldn’t figure it out..

Just found an article where dulcich took that 340 short block. Added ported cast iron heads flowing 63cfm more than stock. 253cfm at .500 (i think it was…about tye same as speedmasters you can get for $750 complete on sale)

An MM lobe solid cam and 1.6 rockers. So 239@.050 and .570” lift.

465hp at about 6300

Or better yet don’t watch Nicks Garage because Nick is a hack and can barely fumble his way through a dyno session. He is most definitely trying to sell you something, his channel.

They didn't Just add a cam for 100 hp look at post #78, This 340 got 375 hp with 1.88 valves, that 340 in post #78 got 392 hp with X heads, Richards low cr 360 got 387 hp, one of Steve's 318 got 400 hp all with xe268h cam, so there's an conspiracy to make sbm look like they react better than they do ?

He put in all new valve seats, guides and a good valve job is all they say about the heads.

I'd really like to see these stock headed (no porting), air gap, xe268H cammed, 340's pushing 112-113+ mph in the 1/4 at 3200-3300 pounds.

I know of a really scienced out car, 360, j head, ld 340 with and old school 214-224 dinky cam running 11.70's with slow MPH for ET. Far from "stock" 1.88 heads on that one and it weighs in at 2850 or so IIRC.

Dyno numbers sell parts. The vaporizer deal done a long time ago to get the correction factor overstated so a big name could claim a certain HP... yeah someone thought that up. :)
Track numbers prove dyno numbers... those magazines failed miserably over the years when published stuff was run at the track. 700hp A body car barely running mid 11's, yeah 700 right.

They're clearanced for a roller on the tubes. Im sure he does, probably a few sets. All those yrs with the magazines and heads n testing.. his place is a stockpile. Lol.

Mine are decent though...they move about 250cfm at .400 lift and 280cfm at .500. The .300 is 200's.
I'm not asking to buy but, if you had to put a price on your heads to sell them what would it be?

Have you looked up how those 1/4 mile formulas came about ?

Basically hp guesstimation and road and track data, sounds more legit than a dyno.

Sounds like those stock iron heads had a little grinding done on them. So they are NOT stock iron heads. That would make more sense in regards to the power output. That dyno derby article is still one of the biggest BS trash cans tossed out ever, 390hp. ummmm NO!

Or another way to look at it is would you spend 800 bucks to rebuild a set of 1.88 stock heads or come up with another 1200 for the AFRs?
I did spend $900 to freshen a set of iron heads, but it's not a fair comparison. They were professionally ported max wedge.
Would I spend $800 on wornout 1.88 small block heads? Oh heck no!
Choice #1..... speedmaster black friday specials! Cnc'ed bare.

The last set of J Heads I had done was $1600.00.
New hardened seats. New Guides, Port Work/ Good Vavle Job add in Srings and Hardware.
$2000.00 Out The Box Aluminum not far away. And I ended up having a Guy who lost his Job at Checkers Auto Parts offer me a set of 25 year old new in box Eldebrock for 1200 delivered to my door. I asked for a week to get cash together I just had a grand at my home. And was working out of town. We get paid when jobs completed.
A few days later says if my wife can give him a thousand call it a day.
I was not even beating him up on price. He was happy and so was I.
But now a have a $1600.00 set of 202 J Heads laughing at me.
Ship happens, don't it?

281 is bull piss nhra factors the 71 340 @320
Of course he worked the heads for his daughter

There Is just a bit of difference between a 340 that Mopar put together, and one that a stock eliminator or super stock racer put together.
I'd be willing to bet the one Nick did weren't no stock eliminator version.
340s make 281 wih a plug wire pulled built by dantheman thats who silly 281 is

Quite don't let Dan know. He did not know. Oh well cats out the bag.

I agree the Westech dyno is pretty optomistic. If Dulcich has his set up the same way it is still likely close to an apples to apples comparison. Just deduct about 30 peak hp for real numbers.

100% and plus I've yet to see any show any real proof of it being a happy dyno.

**service announcement**

An engine dynamometer is agnostic. it is only a tool. it cannot be happy, nor sad.

it can, however be wet or dry. or possibly hot or cold, from an outside perspective of course.

i may be persuaded, though.

Hey guys, I’ve heard it a few times now and I’m gonna say something about it. Westechs dyno is not happy. I’ve personally had an engine I built on a very respected dyno about 6 miles from westech and wasn’t happy with the results. Took it to Westech and dynod it within 4 hours of the previous place. It made even less. If you have no direct proof other than to say “looks like a happy dyno” then you should stop saying it. They don’t juice numbers for magazines, they don’t fudge the correction factors, they don’t run em at 120 degrees just to make a Superman pull. I know them personally and never ever seen that kinda crap happen there.
