**600hp sbm block limit? Or is it bs!!**

-
Ok, all have heard all this "talk" that a SBM Block has a limit of 600HP before it Grenades, as far as I know it is all BS. I am not saying the it is not true but would like some actual proof from an end user.

Post your Broken Block Pictures along with a Story as to How it actually did Fail or Break and at What Power Level.
Wow, necro thread!

Mine makes 630hp, N/A. Stock block with competent machine work. I'll report back here if the block cracks at some point.

416" on the dyno

The twin turbo 344” motor has been shelved. Not because it broke but because I went bigger. It made over 100 passes at 1k no problem. The 340 in my duster is over 20 years at 900 hp. It still runs.
When are you racing again? I thought maybe I’d see you at SCSN last weekend but didn’t. I miss Irwindale.

Its gonna be a while. Maybe MATS? Those were some good times!! RIP Irwindale.
Shoot me a message when you go. I’ll come out and support anyway I can. Or maybe I’ll have my pile ready and run next to ya!

Sad to hear that Irwindale got sold and no longer going to be there. All the strips are disappearing down there. Only Bakersfield and Pomona left for socal

And Perris, and chuckwalla, and Barona. There’s still tracks scattered around. But I agree about irwindale. Sad deal for sure.

do you know what let go in the engine or was there to much carnage to know for sure ? Hopefully no one was hurt .

I was told it failed at the deck first. But it shat a bunch of parts out of the block. There is NO WAY I like anything 500 hp NA on a production block.

At that level (if you are paying attention) you already see head gasket issues, ring seal problems and you have to open up the main bearing clearance to give the crank some extra room when the block is deflecting and moving all over the place.

500? or do you mean 600?

I see the block showing distress at 500 hp. At 600 hp you are just hoping it doesn’t grab a bearing because the block is moving like Jello.

Or that trace detonation doesn’t blow the head gasket because the decks are moving around.

Yep, on the deck we saw the rubbing mark from the head gasket moving around.
Pretty amazing how much **** moves around with that hard chunk of cast iron .
Engine had quite a bit of stroke too 4.250 I think.
6th licensing pass. 125mph just before 1000 feet. Block split, coughed the rod, piston and part of the oil pan underneath the car.
Dude is just fine and still racing. (Newbomb already knows this)

That sucks. Kinda hard to tell which came first the egg or the chicken. Probably detonation caused it to kick a rod and saw the block in half. I have yet to blow a head gasket at over 1400 hp at 20psi. So I realize you guys are cautious and thats fine but the fact remains that some motor live just fine at twice the level you say you have major problems. Filling the block exacerbates the detonation problem.

Damn, guess I have a new thing to worry about, I just tall poured my 400 block. Might be running a little more octane this time around.

It’s not caution. It’s seeing the distress in these engines when they come back in.

I get it. Turbo guys get away with a lot. NA is clearly different from a turbo. And a roots blower is different than a turbo.

Im not saying they fail at *** power. What I’m saying is looking at blocks for 40 years you can see what happens when the power (NA) goes up, especially when rpm goes up. They are under distress. The main caps are moving around all over the place. The main bearings show different wear patterns because the block is twisting around. Stud girdles and that type of “fix” isn’t really a fix. Do guys make power using them? Yes. I’ve used them. But they never fixed a weak block.

What I find interesting is your comment that a filled block exacerbates detonation. I don’t know that I’ve ever seen that.

Do you know what causes a filled block to be more detonation prone.

Let no man tell you the limit, father luck only knows. Do you feel lucky.
Do you feel Lucky....Punk, do you ? Lol
True, same dude is going to put 900 HP out of a 230 casting 400-512 with another brand new car.
I hope it works out better for him this time.

For sure. A totaled car and possible injuries or death is far more expensive than a race block.
