Had neck pain on and off for about 20 years. Just kept working through it,like a fool! Went to a physiotherapist for 4 visits and it didn't help much. Wondering about trying a chiropractor, heard a lot of horror stories so I'm kinda worried about letting him/her crank my neck. I've had enough,in constant pain now for 7 months and I have to do something. What do you think? Thanks for your replies.

The chiropractor I saw did not help, but give it a try. I ended up getting a nerve block after extensive diagnostics to locate the exact area. Ten days later, zero pain, that was 9 years ago.

I just got back to work after 51/2 months..(.Back.) Never went to one but physio not a huge fan. Sure it helps but its not the end all. I would give it a shot but i would get them to xray your neck before any treatment.being in Orthopaedics its good to know what your dealing with first. Good luck.

I have visited my Chiropractor for years now. They have helped me a lot. Head aches and pinched nerves are no fun. They may help!

I have had severe pain in my left shoulder for a long time. Especially when driving long distances. I have been going to my chiropractor for a while now and it has helped a lot. He is very well known in town and is not a quack by any stretch of the imagination. That is what I suggest you do. Ask around get references. They are not all created equal.

NO---- I was having similar pains, which eventually led to constant pain in my neck, shoulder, and left arm... Went to see my PCP and they sent me for an MRI. Turns out I have Degenerative Disc Disease, with bone spurs in my C5 & C6 areas. Well back in 2007 they could only fuse my neck, didn't do that, but this fall they are doing a disc replacement, which keeps the mobility -- Talked to 3 Neurosurgeons and they all said that a Chiropractor would actually do more harm than good do to the bone spurs which can only be seen on an MRI... they are hidden on an X-ray and most Chiropractors only do X-rays.

If you have had this for years you may want to talk to your doc about an MRI of the neck to find the root cause of it prior to jumping into a chiropractor adjustment.

just a though... Good luck with it

DRENO,

I swear by my guy. I tell folks that he's kept me alive for years. But do yourself a huge favor and ask around for recommendations. If any one tells you their doc is a little rough keep looking. My doc works on my neck (migraines) and back and has never "hurt" me making an adjustment. He also never strings me out like most will by having you come back every week forever. I've gone to my doc since 1974 when I first hurt my back. We're the same age and he's retiring soon so I may be screwed. Best of luck and I hope you find a good Doctor. Constant pain is, well a pain. Dan

Do some research and find a good chiropractor near you. They can help.

I was rear ended back in 88 by a drunk kid (18 years old - Abe Zacheim from Wyandotte, MI). He put a POS old mid 80's Escort into the back of my Barracuda at the time doing over 90 MPH on the highway.

I went to the hospital the next day and after 6 hour wait they told me to come back in a week if it still hurts... Not after waiting that long and not getting seen...

So after three more months, my lower back and neck hurt so bad I was in pain whether sitting, standing, or laying down. My dad found a local Chiropractor that specialized in football and sports injuries. I saw him regularly for 4 - 5 months and he made a huge difference!

I still get pain here and there, but it is not like it was.

Dave it's like they say what is good for one is not always good for the other. Helga goes to one and she gets fixed right up when I went I was way worse after. When I get real bad I go to a massage therapist and she works on me. But I would try get an MRI before I let anybody crack my neck. Robert

No! I went to a chiropractor that helped at first but the last time he adjusted me so hard that he caused me to have a herniated disc that put me out of work for 2 months. They can help but it is not scientific and cause more harm than good.

I thought good things about chiros until I met an osteopath.

these folks are amazing. mine moved my vertra in my neck to a point that my neurosurgeon was blown away and the man that wanted to operate on me "immediately" said an operation was no longer needed. MRIs backed this up.

an osteopath treats the body as a whole vs just the skeleton.

mine saved me life as far as I am concerned and has helped both my kids (who are athletes) tremendously..

i cannot say enough positive things..

i still get tuned up on a regular basis.

Ian.

NO Go and get a cat scan and or an MRI you probably have a Bulging/ Herniated disc that is inpinging a nerve causing your pain. I had 5 levels of my cervical spine fixed and if I didnt I would have ended up in a wheel chair..Please dont take chances with something that can be fixed by waiting...See a nerosurgeons they can do so much to fix what is wrong . You will be glad you did. You dont have to live in pain. Chiropractors just push things around and could rupture the disc that is bulging and cause even more pain...Bill

I have back problems as well. I had a herniated disk L3 L4, I did the chiropractor thing and it seems to help but I would feel better and stop going and then the pain would come back and be even worse. I got one of the steroid shots when the pain came back at one point. I now use an inversion table and I really like it. I went to this because my chiropractor put me on a stretching table thing to try after a cracking session. He was going to sell me a certain amount of sessions for I can't remember how much money. I came home and started doing some research on the table that he put me on and the inversion table came up. So after a talking to a few people and reading some stuff online I bought one. I use mine if I feel my back getting tight or if I have any pain. The table is at my house so I can use it anytime, don't need an appointment, and the total cost was less than what I was paying for about 6 chiropractic sessions.

Dreno - I'm sure that you will find as I did that there are many ways to take care of back pain and there isn't really one answer that works for everybody. I liked my chiropractor but the appointment thing and the cost was the thing that steered me the way I am going now. One thing that I learned for sure though, is that it doesn't get better just powering though the pain, if you are having pain get some help. I tried the powering through first as well, but when it came to the point that I couldn't stand upright long enough to take a leak without wanting to cry because of the pain it was time for help.

Best of luck to you and I hope you start feeling better, back pain is the absolute worst thing in the world to have and deal with.

I've gone for years, much less pain, a lot less headaches, and haven't gotten sick in a long time.

Do your self a favor though look around and find someone you agree with or has a really good following. There are a lot that give the good ones a bad name and just try to keep you coming back and keep billing.

I go once a month now unless i do something stupid and I know the guy I go to lives and breathes what he tells me. A good one isn't about making you feel good for a couple days and then your in pain again. A good one is about making the best out of your life

X2, as an added bonus, an osteopath is a real doctor that can write prescriptions if needed. -pauly

looks like the replies here basically answer why I've never gone to one (bad back for 25 years or so). Half the people say they're miracle workers, the other half say they're quacks.

That's why I started this thread because it seems divided amoung the people I talk to at work and in my travels. :banghead:

Cover all your bases as stated above. If something is wrong chiro won't help. If you do go. Don't stop after a few visits. Granted I think chiros and Dentists like you there too often. But given time they can straighten you to normal. I did 2 years of chiro and haven't been to visit in about 2 years now. No headaches or leg pains.

i have a lot of back problems from metal plates and hardware in my back that they put in there to rebuild my back and pelvic area after an accident and works for me and what i used in Re-hab when i had to learn to walk again is an inversion therapy table .......when you take the pressure off your back after a trauma or general wear and tear it can feel sooooo good and it really works......sometimes i hear a lot of "pops" from my back when i use the table but it really makes it feel better....its unbelievable really.

I'm for the Osteopath too. Yes they are real Doctors, and have been a big help to me in the past. I have been to chiro's also. Some helped, others didn't.

an actual re-hab clinic might help too.....an independent sports re-hab place separate from the hospital might help .....you might be doing something in your walk or habits that might be triggering off a back problem .....its amazing what the re-hab clinic guys know and the pointers thay can give

Ive heard both yay and nay about chiropractors...I agree that each person and their pains are different an MRI would help narrow the problems down! Ive had back pain for a very long time and neck pain has started in the last couple years. All stems from a motorcycle accident 25 years ago.

Thanks for the link Rani, Im definitely going to look into an inversion table!

chiropractors, yes... A bad chiropractor that does not do there home work ..NAAA! Si voice.
Need to get back to seeing one.. JMO. I did not read any post's ..

I've only been to Chiro once and he helped me w back. But I'm lucky as I will usually work out an ache after a few days. My wife however gets worse to where she can hardly walk if she has something get pinched or jammed so she has to get an adjustment to get back aligned. She had a great Chiropractor before we moved and now she can't find anyone near as good. Some are better than others. If it is arthritis or degenerative disc problem then a Chiro won't fix it.
