    Oil in the combustion chamber.

If not coming from seals or guides, looks like head needs be tossed. Magnaflux if a lot of money sunk into it already. Even if you pinpoint the source, IDK what can be done to fix it.

    Carb recommendation 408 stroker

The 650 DP, properly jetted, is the best option for street use IMO. Throttle response on low end will be better, especially with 3.23s.

What cam to use in 340

Of the choices given, I like the XE268. Big cams like high compression. Generally speaking aluminum heads are better for high compression as they will tolerate more heat before detonation occurs. If it were me and this was my #1 car, I'd pull the Eddys off the 318 and use 'em on this motor.

    cutting oil filter open

You may want to check out a big box parts store (Repco ?) for an engine oil analysis kit. WIX makes several in the $15-20 USD range. It involves taking an oil sample and sending it off, hopefully some place close by.

    Help please asap!

This assumes that the 72 hasn't been converted to BBP. It will swap. Since the V-8 K-member will be needed, the easiest and fastest way to do the swap is to drop the entire assembled K-frame (engine, transmission, steering gear, suspension) through the bottom of the car. If rear on 72 is an...

    Light weight 273?

The LA engine family departs from the earlier A engine by use of "thin wall" block casting and simpler cylinder heads. The LA engine block alone accounts for 50 lbs, the heads are about 25 pounds per pair lighter. This change put the 273 V-8 within 50 lbs of the 225 /6 (iron) [525 lbs vs 475...

    273 4bbl dyno results

Curious as to why you chose a finger/Long style pressure plate as opposed to a diaphragm/Borg & Beck style. My experience has been that the Long clutch is more difficult to feather/slip than the B & B is. The Long clutch will take more abuse and run a little cooler as a result. Back in...

    Critique my mismatched Teen Build.

Engine recipe looks good. Think twice about going bigger on the cam. Big cams like big compression. Go too far and throttle response drops off. Comp Cams has selection free software available. http://www.compcams.com Agree with recommendation for dumping the 7¼ axle and its 2.92 ratio. If...

I want to build my first motor, but I need input

Recommend that a machine shop be used for the heads and boring or planing of the block if needed. If the block is hot tanked (cleaned) at a machine shop be sure the cam oil gallery plug (Trelbig's post) is in place. Otherwise your day, and engine, will be wrecked. You can pay someone else...

Is this a decent intake manifold?

I've run across E48s in M-body cop cars. Actually, they were taxis that started out as TX DPS cars by the time I came across them. IIRC, the engines were 318s with roller cams and 360 heads. The carburetor was a non-feedback, electric choke Q-jet. I recall diving in on an old Diplomat (I was...

Is this a decent intake manifold?

trying to ID intake. Mopar used Thermoquads on the 340 starting in 1971. The part number is not correct for the 72 340. 360 4v engines also used the TQ and the E48 (318 4v) used a Quadrajet. The Carter Thermoquad and the Rochester Quadrajet are the only carburetors to have the large...

340X heads vs late model LA heads vs Magnum.

The only 318 to use the larger port heads, as far as I know, was the E48 cop car engine of the mid-80s. The valves were 1.88/1.60 IIRC.

340X heads vs late model LA heads vs Magnum.

It seems to me, answering the unknowns would be helpful for starters. Running a bore scope in the cylinders may be worthwhile (looking at accumulated carbon & cylinder walls). Before you laugh to quickly at expense, you can get one that works with a smart phone for under $100 at Home Depot...

Will this work all right? Or Not enough Back pressure or too much exhaust flow??

Sounds like a plan. It will not accelerate rapidly with the 2.76:1 rear gear and the OD transmission. At 70 mph, it will be ticking over @ about 1700-1800 rpm, assuming a 26.1" wheel/tire package (235/60-15). Good for fuel mileage on the flat open road, however. IMO a 3" pipe is only good...

Oil Pump vs Engine Wear question ??

There is a spring in the oil pump that insures a minimum pressure. It is not at all uncommon for the spring to fatigue with age and present the symptoms you describe. The spring can be stretched and replaced. That will restore operating oil pressure, but may compromise initial flow of oil at...

    Grade 3 bolts

Actually, they weigh about the same. http://www.forabodiesonly.com/mopar/showthread.php?t=73878 The thing about the /6 is that due to greater length, more torque is exerted on the bolts and the vertical arm of the stand. Grade 5s will do fine. If washers are needed to keep bolts from...

    Intake question

I live in Texas. Texas cold does not equal Nova Scotia cold. Our winters here are very tame compared to yours. I have a friend in Austin with a 318 4-bbl with no choke blade or shaft. To start it for the first time during a day, I crank and pump gas while he holds a rag over the mouth of the...

    Intake question

Without a picture of the carburetor it's hard to say. The picture that Rumblefish posted is the choke pull-off. A complete AVS will have choke plate in the primary side of the carburetor. The pull-off keeps the plate open when the engine is warm. To install the carburetor and have...

    318 differences 1972/1973

Main differences are: Drop in advertised compression ratio from 9.2:1 to 8.62:1. Hardened valve seats on 73 & later 318. Change in horsepower rating from gross rating to SAE net. nm9stheham has it right. The compression ratio change was accomplished by a combination of larger cylinder...

My first engine build. I just hope it runs when I'm done!

We haven't had E10 in this part of the woods very long. From my own and other's experiences, the fuel tends to be hard on internal carburetor parts, is hydrophilic, and turns to a nasty jelly in the fuel system if left to sit for a few months. E85 has to a magnitude greater in these regards. I...

HELP stud snapped on valve cover

VC stud? Usually find bolts holding down VC. IMO, if I had to run w/o a bolt, I'd prefer to have the middle one on the bottom. Can you drive like this? I don't recommend it. VCs are a typical source of leaks. If oil drips on hot exhausts, there will be smoke at best, fire at worst. Can I...

Help! Wiped cam lobes? - Video inside

In looking at your plugs, IMO, the problem is running rich. If it was oil, the residue would shine in places as would the exhaust cross-over. I can't see any shine. My suggestion? Fix the obvious (the cam) first, then tackle the mixture issue. You're doing fine. Stay after it.

    1965 mopar 273 heads

Possibly not. Some of the early 273s had a different angle for bolting on the intake manifold than the later ones. All of the LA heads from 66 on have the same bolt angle. IDK when the change was made, end of MY or a running change during the 65 model year. This does not affect the heads...
