    Installing the 8 1/4

There should be no slop in the bushing eye. I believe there were two different size front eye bolts on the a body springs, you may need to check into that.

    8 1/4 Driveshaft Q's

Might I suggest measuring the distance from the tip of the trans output shaft to the face of the axle companion flange with the car on the ground ? Take that dimension with you when you visit the driveshaft shop and tell them to shorten the unbent shaft to the correct length based on your...

    Reverse/steering lock linkage?

Sorry if I am a little confused by your post. Are you asking about the clutch z bar support for the bell housing ? If so, those are bolted on to the housing with two bolts. The pivot or ball for the z bar is riveted to a flat 3/16 or 1/4" steel plate, which the bolts go thru. Try contacting...

    Driveshaft help

First verify if the 727 trans is the same length as the 904. If it isnt then you would be best off waiting until the trans and axle you intend to use are in the car and the car is on the ground. The measurement according to the mopar chassis book is the distance from the outputshaft of the trans...

    shiftkit

I put in a TF 2 kit from transgo in a 904 - I thought the instructions were awful, but the parts seemed to be very good. They need to rewrite those instructions. I thought the idea of giving you ranges on the drilled openings was odd, Im not a trans expert, so what do I know, I used the...

    Changing Leaky Axle Seal

There are two seals on each axle and inner and an outer. The inners are shot if you are getting gear oil leakage, replace as directed above ... The outers require pressing off the bearing and race and then replacing them with new parts, might as well replace the outer bearing at that time. Dont...

    New 8 1/4 rear

to determine the axle ratio either the thing will have a tag as mentioned above or in most cases they are missing. If missing then rotate one axle one revolution and count the number of turns the pinion makes. 1 tire revolution to 2 3/4 pinion turns its a 2.7x gear etc. Before installing I...

Duncan Motor sports ratchet shifter ?

Hey Fishy - That doesnt sound encouraging, Is it a problem with the "catch" on the end of the handle or what did you see as the main issue ?

Duncan Motor sports ratchet shifter ?

I took a look at the www.duncan-motor-sports.com website and they sell a plate that replaces the stock gate on the old non ratcheting shifters, converting it to a ratchet shifter. Looks like its a snap to install. Anyone have experience with one of these ? Comments ? I have a ratchet shifter...

Sorry guys Dont shoot me! F@#D 9" to my Valiant.

Seems to me that the ford axle widths are pretty close to an A body in the old maverick, mustang and granada bodies - but be sure to check - this is going off my memory.....

    A DIRECT SWAP '71 904 for '70 904 plus... ???

If you are swapping the rear axles and are taking the springs as well, and dont intend to do any cleaning or painting - leave the springs and axle bolted together and remove them as a unit from the donor vehicle, remove the 7 1/4 with its springs and hangers brake lines etc from your car and...

    Differences in 904's

I think the main differences in these trannys are: pre 67 or so used a smaller crank pilot hub, 77 and later used the lock up converters in some applications. I think all you need to do is specify the year transmission and the engine and thats it, and of course the stall speed.

Need help to ID my 8 3/4 rear.

You'd should check the center to center distances on the spring saddles, should be 43 inches. The overall axle width is something close to 57 inches drum to drum. Those are the stock widths.

Challenger rear in an A body

You can make an e body axle fit, drum to drum is 61.6 " on E bodies, earlier B body axle is 59.5- 60.0 " (66-70), A body axle is 57.1 ". Hope this helps.

8 1/4 Rear Installed, now about that Carrier...

I'd take a hike over to NAPA's web site and do some research on carrier bearings for 8 1/4 axles, maybe they sent you a set for the later style 8 1/4 used in dakotas ??? Did you save your old bearings ? Are they on the old carrier ? Maybe you can compare them that way. As you may also know there...

Not sure, but I know the axle shafts in an 8 3/4 A body unit are exactly the same length. Been there done that recently when putting in yukon axles.

    neutral safety switch

On the older cars the reverse switch was on the gear shift - either on the column or on the floor shifter itself. To change over to the later style you need to locate the wiring for the shifter operated switch and wire it to the lead on the three prong tranny switch. A wiring diagram would help...

3 different years, same transmission, which one should I use?

Use the 76 tranny - it should be a part throttle kickdown unit which is preferred over the other two and will be a 904 unless it was messed with. The 66 tranny will have a small torque converter pilot hub and I think a smaller main shaft diameter, this will make hooking it to a later 318...

    8 1/4 rear end questions

The only way to tell if its a sure grip for certain is to lift both rear wheels and spin the tires. If they turn the same direction then its a sure grip if they turn opposite directions then its an open diff. To check the ratio turn the tires one revolution and count the number of turns the...

    8 1/4 rear end questions

I would not be concerned about finding an 245 ratio A body unit. The key here is to find an A body unit that is a serviceable piece. You can always change the gears/differential. I have not seen anything of use in the scrap yards here in years, but then I live in chicago too, there arent any...

Is my tranny on its way out?

The adjustment procedure is in any old mopar service manual, strongly recommend you read the procedure before doing anything.. Its really easy. There are two band adjusters one inside in the oil pan the other outside. Basically you undo the lock nut and then turn the adjustment stud in until it...

    Trans swap

I dont know all the ins and outs of this swap, but in general what I understand is you need to modify the floor hump to allow the larger tail shaft of the OD trans. Dont know much more than that. Depends on the year car as well. 67 and up will be easier than 67 and older.

    Tci---help

Im not sure what the answer is....... but I would try a few cranks on the starter motor and then check the level and see if it went down, as a start..The times Ive filled an empty trans Ive had to run the motor to get the level to drop, but I was able to get 3-4 quarts in first before running it.

    904 rebuild & converter recommendations

After posting a few weeks ago, on freshening up a stored trans.... I decided to rebuild the 904 (73/318 dart original app) for my 66 dart. Years ago I had rebuilt a 727 using a B&M transkit, with what I thought was a pretty good result. Is the B&M transkit still a good choice or is there...

    Green bearings for street

On an 8 3/4 axle for a b body - I installed the axles with green bearings and the thrust block in place. Not cool. The axles bottomed out on the block and the flanges of the green bearings started to bend when I started to tighten them down. Bad. So from my perspective you do need to remove the...

    904 freshening ?

Hi tranny experts out there. Several questions: 1) I will be installing my 318 and 904 trans in my 66 dart sometime this spring. The trans was rebuilt using stock pieces, and rebuilt stock converter about 9 years ago, it was run in a car for a short while.. less than 500 miles, then yanked...
