    What Rear End Is This??

Only the 360 cars got disc brakes and then the LBP standard that year, it was an option on all the other cars. Drums on the front mean SBP. So somewhere down the road the original rear gave up and somebody swapped it with a rear from a 73 up a body with disc brakes. They were probably stunned...

    Big Bolt Rears

Right my donor 73 Duster was BBP but manual disc brakes. it's the disc option not the power option that added the BBP. The other obvious axle swap that guide left out was the Ford 8.8 which seems the best option to me. They cost less, have good ratios, are likely limited slip, can have disc...

    Flexplate 360 question.

There are 2 different B&M flexplates for externally balancing a 360. One is bigger and works with the factory larger converters in the 727. It is also drilled for the smaller aftermarket and factory high stall 727 converters. The other flexplate is listed as the 360/904 one but would also work...

    Big Bolt Rears

I had my factory driveshaft shortened for $100. The guy who did it knew what he was doing. He took off the end, shortened the tube, rewelded the end and then turned the weld down on a lathe. He said it didn't seem like the strongest driveshaft around but certainly not the weakest he has seen in...

    Big Bolt Rears

If they had front drum brakes even 73 up they are still small bolt pattern. Its the 73 up disc brake cars and even the 318 got a 7 1/4 unless manual or HD rear was ordered then it should have a 8 1/4, along with the 340 and 360 cars got the 8 1/4. The pre 73 cars are all small bolt pattern but...

    Flexplate 360 question.

Are you sure you have a 727 in your car now? If you do and its the factory converter I still wouldn't use it because of the stall. Most likely you have a 904 and the 904 converter won't go in a 727. I'd keep the 904, maybe the factory converter because its likely higher stall, and get the B&M...

Axles 8.25" rear from 1974 Dart

Any grand Cherokee setup would be wider. Maybe not a ton but a lot like using a b-body rear in an a-body. You would need skinny rear tires, high offset rims, or jack the back and let em stick out.

    8 1/4 R&P interchange

No the spline count is the axle shaft so I don't know for sure how just the ring and pinion might Interchange. I was looking more at track locs and knew I needed a pre-97. Look up new ring and pinion sets for sale and see if they make 2 different parts for the year range.

    8 1/4 R&P interchange

I think it's 96 and earlier that you need or 27 spline, the 97 up are 29 spline.

3.91 gears for shorter 60 mph trips

I drive mostly around town on 3.25 and 25 1/2" tires and the rpms get old. To me it stops feeling like crusing and makes me feel like I'm working the car all the time. I think we are so used to overdrives anything over 2000 rpm is for accelerating.

    Chrysler 8 1/4

A 8.25 and shorter driveshaft is probably the least expensive swap while gaining some strength. The next least expensive is the Ford Explorer 8.8 with on side cut down and a 2nd donor axle added from the other side. That is as strong as a 8.75, and posi and disc brakes are usually included as...

    8 1/4 question

You can buy a new Dana style sure grip from mopar performance right now for about $325, you can find the same unit w/o the Mopar Performance name for a bit less around $300. Yje aurborn style cost more unless they are used like this one for $219...

    904 or 727 ????

I put a 360 in my 68 where a 318/904 once sat. I had a 727 and was going to use it but listened to the advice here and used the 904. I am glad and it cost less to do even though I had to shorten the driveshaft anyway because I changed the rear end too. The best thing I think about the 904 is it...

    7 1/4 to 8 3/4 swap question about brakes

The doctor is in! So there you have it the BBP ones will swap but the SBP ones will not. I just looked my BBP 7.25 has 5 mounting bolts, and 10" drums.

    7 1/4 to 8 3/4 swap question about brakes

Are you guys sure about this? Maybe it changed in 73 but my 73 7.25 BBP seems to have the identical brake setup as my 73 8.25 BBP although I swapped everything EXCEPT the backing plates. They sure look like they would swap as well.

    I hate headers!!!!!!!!

I put my headers on my 318 the way the directions said. Later when pulling my 318 I did it the old man way out the top with the transmission unbolting the headers leaving them in the engine bay, which didn't end up working and 1/2 way out I had to fight the headers again anyway. When putting the...

Will backing plates (and brakes) from an 8 1/4" fit an 8 3/4"?

The 73 up cars with disc brakes got the BBP. They still used the 7.25 in /6 and 318 autos in those cars. So BBP 7.25s are pretty common. I just swapped all my 73 BBP 7.25 axle brake parts (except backing plates) over to my new 73 BBP 8.25 and it all went in exactly the same.

    what's the best sure grip for a 8 1/4

I saw there is a powertrax lock right 27 spline locker on ebay right now for $175. The thing I like about that is it goes in w/o messing wiht the ring and pinion settings. I'm sure it locks up real solid. The down side it might not be the best thing around town. I don't know the difference in...

whats up with the 2.45 8 1/4 housing?

Where is he one you found? I'm looking for a decent deal one one too. There was one on ebay that was the auburn type for $215 shipped supposedly checked and rebuilt but I was looking for a better price. they are $300 new for the dana type. I don't know where you will find one for the small case.

    7 1/4 axle question

That is a good thought though, I didn't even think about it and just swapped a complete lbp 7 1/4 in where the sbp 7 1/4 once sat. Now I've found a 8 1/4 that I'm getting ready to put in. Stinks my original disc brake donor car only had a 7 1/4 but it was only $200 so I can't complain. It did...

Not really, if you want to bolt it to the transmission first! Lip goes toward the rear.

    7 1/4 suregrip

The reason people ordered them from the factory on low performance cars like a /6 was not for traction at the drags but traction in the snow and ice. It amazing how people got by in the 70s before the mainstream use of 4WD and FWD in the northern climates. A 68 /6 Valiant with a limited slip and...

    340 and 904 trans

I was hoping for 25-2600 as a factory "high stall" should have given, but as it stands, even with 2.76 gears my car is already traction limited. Once I get the 3.25s in should be awesome for a street car. My 360 is set up for good low rpm torque.

    340 and 904 trans

I have a stock 68 318 904 converter behind my mild build 360 and it is brake stalling at 2100 rpm. Mine didn't have anything marked low stall on it.

    Cherokee 8.25 to 64 Dart?

Narrowing a cherokee 8.25 to use A body 8.25 axles seems like a lot of work. If you have A body 8.25 axles they probably are in an A body housing. If you just want the posi and good gears out of a cherokee just transfer that stuff into the A body. The 8.25 spline count changed somewhere in 1996...

    kickdown linkage interchange

I put a 360 with air gap and performer where a 318 2bbl once sat on my 68 and the rod is about 1 3/4-2" to short. I still have the 904 so I don't know down below if the 727 is different. I plan on cutting my stock rod and welding in a peice or bending the tip of some new threaded rod and...

    Seriously!!!

Ok so you have a converter you want to use, the B&M 2000 for a 727. What the engine shop is telling you is that it won't bolt up to the factory flexplate they have on that 360 which probably had an 11.75" in converter and your new converter is a 10.75". The factory flexplates were sized to the...

    8.25 suregrip setup

They have the 27 spline, the first post of this thread has the mopar performance one from Summit, and I have a few links lower down of the Dana ones (I still think they are the same part.) Used they are less common but I see them out there. The most common are probably in pre 95 Cherokees that...

    8.25 suregrip setup

I'm sure you could order custom length 29 spline axles for you rear but it would much less just to keep the 27 spline setup. If you don't have a 8.25 already and want disc brakes, posi, and heavy duty and are looking for a donor then the explorer 8.8 is the way to go.

    8.25 suregrip setup

The factory take outs I have seen on ebay have "Dana trac loc" cast on them. I just think the mopar performance part is probably the same thing. Made by Dana with a MP part number on it. I can't find any 27 spline so I'm not positive, but the 29 spline ones Dana.
