    I wouldn't use the small rods if I was building a fresh 400 hp engine.I've had the small 318 rods actually look like spaghetti after being in my 4 speed dart for a couple years....and it wasn't near 400 hp I'm sure.also the 72 318 was the first year for the bigger rod in a 318 and for that year...

    If you have a 72 or earlier k frame laying around all you need is that and the regular v8 mount on driver side and use a truck mount on the passenger side...done it a bunch and its easy peasy.

    Its not a 440 distributor is it?maybe someone changed it b4 you got it.....also the bushing may not be seated all the way in the block,if it's even been changed.

    life does get in the way sometimes... you have the right attitude tho. good luck with it all,and have that valvetrain geometry checked out real good on the next hot engine you build....I also second the sleeve... some of the best 340s I've ran had one. mike bee

    as stated if a sleeve is installed correctly there is nothing wrong with it... my best and oldest build... a 68 340 has a sleeve in it and still runs great after 20 years of beating tha crap outta it on tha street and strip!

    well covered....340 does sound the best when telling people what engine is in ur car. i definitely would pull it completely apart b4 giving more than a couple hunid dollars for it...also as stated,x or j heads = good stuff..and the earlier the date the better! good luck!

    i was at hp machine in norwood nc and hollis(the owner operator) had a 360 block that i sold last year and somehow(bloomer..like post #2)it's now a 440 ci small block....bad ***! oh yeah,btw it's going in a 66 valiant wagon too.

    it's a big block alt.brkt.early 70's on up...it's also broke...as rob said...that half circle is where it bolts to the block/head is supposed to be a hole circle

    73/74 340 & 360 heads...pre smog but there getting ready. sometimes they have a j on the bottom @ push rod holes.

    i have one on my 70 duster with a regular 69 340 air cleaner and it fits fine.

    usually you can look at the top of the push rod and see tiny marks on the edge of the cup from contact with the rocker.i would be leary of all of the push rods and replace them.i use comp,stock and whatever kind is laying around on a street engine. the 340 i've ran so long has a hydraulic cam...

    looks to me like the push rods are to long...look at the one next to the broken one.it's to close to the rocker.you might be able to shim your rocker shaft, replace the broken push rod,adjust em all and go cruizen... i hope so anyway...good luck! i run those stock 273 rockers on a lot of 340s...

    i used kb 190s in my 74 duster...it busts a nut!gotta be 10.5 ta 1 and as replicaracer43 said end gap is critical.

    they hit the intake and you need to clearance them in two places on each cover....right where the intake runners are.

    sealed power is whats in my demon 340,there cast 10.5 :1....i don't know the part # though.
