    360 head bolts

The LA engines don't have the head bolt holes going into the water jacket. I know that the Chevy engines do so that statement might just be a blanket statement on all the gasket set instructions. Just make sure that you use the proper assembly lube on the threads and under the bolt head. Ken...

Harland Sharp Roller Rockers -340 ??

I agree. There should be at least a minimum of 2 threads showing on the ball end of the adjuster for correct geometry. Ken Edison, NJ

    318 flex plate on a 360/408

If your 408 is internally balanced as you said, all will work fine. Ken Edison, NJ

'71 340 balancer with forged crank

318 balancers are the same so any one of them or a 68-72 340 balancer will work. The 360 and the 73 cast crank balancers will NOT work. Ken

'71 340 balancer with forged crank

From the picture it looks like you have one for an externally balanced engine. If you have a forged steel crank then you need a balancer that doesn't have the offset weight that you can see in the picture. Ken

Cylinder wall problems ( never seen anything like it)

7,000 RPM doing a water burnout! With virtually no load on the engine! That will do nasty things to it. Just like revving it up to 7000 in neutral. 4500-5000 is my max with my NHRA stocker. But that's just me.

I am gapping my rings and got one a little too wide, opinions needed

A BCH is much finer (thinner) than an RCH. My opinion only. LOL! Run it the way it is. .0017" will never be noticed.

    340 main cap fit?

You can still use the 318 caps even though they are cast a little smaller than the 340 caps. Just keep in mind that they aren't as strong. Get some 271/318 main cap bolts and you're set. You need to get the block line honed though. Ken

    Oiling problem. HELP!!!

At the back of the block on each side of the cam plug there are two oil galley plugs. The one on the driver side is larger than the other one. On the inside of the block, behind that larger plug is where the distributor sits but beyond as you go forward on the block, there is another oil galley...

    Knock and smoke

Certainly a bent valve. Thanks not too bad to repair. The block and piston is certainly another story. It looks like #4 piston got hammered or is that just water beads?

    Knock and smoke

"No break in needed on a used cam and lifters if they are put back in order," Not true. The term "break-in" on a used cam isn't a correct term to use either. It is important for the lifters to be installed on the cam lobes that they were run on. The reason that you want to do a "break-in"...

    economic 318 aftermarket heads

I have a set of clean, bare 302 heads along with a single 318 head (cheap) that's been done over already and can bolt on right away. If any of this can help let me know. Ken Edison, NJ

    340 Engine

It's not just the engine but everything else behind it that needs to work in concert with each other. I've been down this road before when I was a lot younger and quickly discovered that either you're going to have a street car or a race car. Trying to mix the two together and you'll get a...

    J head question

X heads never had the 915 casting. The last 3 were 894. Look at your picture and you can see the casting #. The 915 "J" heads came both ways. 1.88 and 2.02. The 360 casting on the head doesn't mean that they are 360 heads since the 360 engine came out in 73 for the cars. It's just a casting...

what is the initial timing on a 383?

I don't know how I still have it but I have a 1976 Borg-Warner tune-up spec book. It covers the stock specs from 1967 to 1976 and according to that, the timing should be 2.5 degrees BTDC for the automatic cars and 0 degrees for the stickshift application. Personnally, I like the 10 degree BTDC...

    340 Motor with 360 heads?

From the pictures, it looks like the crank has the normal factory balancing holes drilled in the counter-wieghts. The balancer may have similar holes for balancing. Rumblefish360 is correct in the the 360 cast into the head doesn't mean that the heads are from a 360. You have to look at the 7...

    Need A Recipe For A 273 Rebuild

Hey Poisondart64, I just got done doing a 2-bbl 273 in a 67 Barracuda rag-top. We did a Formula S clone out of it. The mods that I did to the engine brought it to life. The owner loves it and told me that the first time he drove it home, he knew right away that it had alot more power. Send me an...

    273 Rocker Swap?

Changing to the later style stock stamped rocker setup with the hydraulic lifters is easy but you need to remember to orient the shafts correctly, otherwise the rockers won't get the proper oiling. The shaft oil hole is off-set from the attaching bolt hole so you need to make sure that the oil...
