Got the car media blasted this last week. My son picked it up today. Definitely a lot of sins hiding under layers of Bondo!!! Looks like at least the passenger quarter panel. and a patch or maybe a whole panel on the drivers side as well. He said probably a trunk lid due to rusted lip.

Had a little "mishap" putting the bike away for the winter. Ended up with a broken fibula (small bone in the leg) and a cracked rib. Had surgery and now have a stainless steel plate and a bunch of screws to put it back together!! IMG_6123_1280x960.JPG

Wow, that's a bad surprise. The car looked pretty good on all your pictures. That body work will add some hours to your restoration. Wish you a quick recovery. It's always a pleasure to read your new posts.
      Greetings Wolfgang

Yes- looked really good when I bought it back in 1980. If only I'd taken a body magnet when I went to look at it!!!

I'm mostly mobile again and back in the garage for the first time in 7+ weeks!!! Started putting weight on the leg and walking a bit right after Xmas. Air cast and crutches are GONE!!. Will still need a lot of physiotherapy to restore all the leg muscles.
One of the first things I wanted to do was to check that the Edelbrock RPM Intake (7176) will still give me enough hood clearance. The RPM is quite a bit taller than the stock CI Intake and I was worried the top of the air cleaner would hit the hood. To compensate, I bought a "Low Pro" drop base air cleaner from Mancini Racing. Mancini Racing "Low Pro" Air Cleaner. This drops the air cleaner ~7/8" compared to the stock one.
I mocked up the original stock setup (CI Intake, AVS carb and unsilenced air cleaner) and took some measurements front and back down to the block surface. Then did the same with the RPM intake, Sniper and drop base air cleaner and the dimensions are identical!!!!
It will fit - no problem!!

I'm glad too!!! Sitting around and doing little for 7 weeks has been REALLY tough!!!

Just heard that my Quarter Panels have arrived. Will pick them up and take to my blaster to get the black coating removed before they are primed.

Glad you are back on the mend Jim. Two restorations going on LOL !!
Looking at the pics of the previous repairs. Pretty much what was done back in the early 80's when no one made replacement panels. I remember seeing a pair of NOS quarter panels in a Hemmings magazine back in the 80's . $ 2500.00 US back then!!

Yup- 2 restorations in progress!!!! ha Ha

A few photos of my trunk lid and the rust damage along the lower seam. Have not been able to find another one in better condition so far. It is certainly repairable.

Where did you have your 340 manifolds ceramic coated, and how much did it cost?

                Thanks,

I think it goes quite well with this stupid old geezer who has several loose screws

It actually is a screw that is inserted through the break. The bone was completely broken in 2 pieces, so that screw helps hold the 2 pieces together while the bone heals.

My body shop wanted the inside of the front fenders media blasted. Scraped off the thin undercoating and found they were not the original fenders. They were over the counter and the part number was stamped on them.

I have a line on a deck lid, it's been on a race car sine the mid 70's. The only problems I see is crating & shipping to Ontario from Texas.

Now back to working on the engine. The Edelbrock Performer RPM Intake has a few key differences compared to the stock CI one.
                      1. The tapped hole on the front passenger side has to be drilled and tapped out to 3/8" NPT for the heater hose nipple.
                      2. The tapped hole in the front for the bypass hose is a 3/4" NPT (ie for 1970 and up) but the 1969 manifold is a 1/2" NPT. It will need a 3/4 to 1/2" reducing bushing or a 3/4" male to 5/8" male hose adapter.

Puled the cam bearings and found that #4 showed signs of fatigue damage. These were 1484M. This time I bought the high performance ones SH875S.

Been working on getting the linkage set up correctly for the Holley Sniper on the Edelbrock Performer RPM manifold. The hole in the Sniper linkage for the accelerator and Tranny kickdown was not in the right spot. It did not give enough travel to make the kickdown linkage move to the end. I had to fabricate a plate to get it in the right spot.
Then the stock bracket had to be modified to get the throttle cable at the right height to clear the Sniper linkage. I got a repro bracket, cut off the end and welded in a fabricated piece to raise it 1-3/8". Looks like it will work OK now.

Both the heads and block on my 340 have been planed, but I dont know the total amount. As a result, the intake manifold does not fit correctly. ie it sits too high with gaskets in place. If no gaskets installed, it fits correctly. The Edelbrock intake gaskets (7276) that are specified for this Al intake are about 0.060" thick. They say not to use FelPro gaskets because they are too hard. The FelPro gaskets (MS90109) are about 0.040" thick.
Thus I will have to mill both intake surfaces 0.060" or mill the intake surface of the heads by the same amount to get the correct fit.
