Hello folks

A bit of advice needed please. I will be purchasing a 1973 318 engine with 904 Transmission and swapping it into my 64 Dodge Dart that had a Slant Six with a Push Button cable operated 904.

May I hook up the 1973 904 Tranny to my push button cable operated linkage? I'd rather not cut a hole in the tunnel for a shifter if possible.

Thanks in advance.

No my brother, that will not be possible! All of the cable operated mechanisms are inside the trans, and there is no way to swap them over to the later style trans!

10-4. Floor shifter it is! Am I better off buying something new/aftermarket? If so, can you guys point me in the right direction? Thanks again.

Cheetah turbo action. Wow, impressive but looks more race than my car will be.

Is the Hurst Promatic II a good option?

You could try the unique 65 floor shifter if you can find one, it works with the cable shift trans...

I have an engine trans combo from a 73 Dart. No cables as I understand in this setup.

The 65 shifter and console that goes with it are out there. Imperial Services used to have the conversion cable and valve body spring needed to work with the 65 shifter and 66-later 904. I sold the one I had to member ragtopfury for his son Jake's 65 Barracuda. To my knowledge Imperial Services doesn't sell direct anymore but has teamed up with Schumaker (sp?) of engine conversion mounts fame. If you can source one from them, that's gonna be the only way to use the 65 shifter with a later transmission.

Otherwise, your option is gonna be aftermarket floor shifter. I think there's an aftermarket shifter that resembles the 65 shifter and fits under the 65 console and is cable operated to work with a later transmission. I don't recall which shifter it is - someone will chime in on which one it is.

EDIT: if you can find a 64 V8 904, you can mate it with your V8. Use the crank bushing to mate the early 904 to your late crank. Another possibility to consider.

Keeping the later 904 . I think it would be easier to acquire an aftermarket shifter than to hunt down a 65/shifter. And I don't have the console for the shifter anyhow. Want functional and most cost effective options. Originality or appearance of stock not required with this build.

Ok then, what about swapping in a 66 steering column and linkages to work with the linkage controlled trans that you have...

66 was the first year of linkage transmissions.

Just curious.

Would a 65 trans v-8 trans work with the 64 set-up? It's still cable controlled.
