hi I'm downgrading my duster from 440 to 318 and was wondering if a engine out of a 1994 dodge Dakota Scotty fit into a 1974 duster? What might I have to change? Will the trans fit? Thanks

318 will work, change the oil pan. Carb or FI will lead you to different bridges to cross. Tranny can be made to work, but more work :D

It's going to be a total trans swap because a big block trans won't mate to a small block.

What is a Scotty?
The 318 will be neutral balance. Traditional LA engine pullies work. The water pump may be reverse rotation if the engine had a serpentine belt. If the engine is a "Magnum" series, the threaded bolt holes in the heads may be in different places than a traditional 1967-02 318. This makes for some interesting fitment issues for alternator brackets, P/S brackets, etc.The exhaust manifold on the right/2468 side fits and is a good unit. You'll need a different LH manifold as the outlet shares the same space as the steering shaft.
As said, you'll need a center sump oil pan and pickup.
If using headers, there are casting nubs just below the cylinder deck that interfere. They need to be cut or ground off for the pipes to fit and the header flange to sit flush to the heads.

I want to use the complete engine and trans out of the Dakota. It only has 30,000 miles and the trans is a automatic with electric overdrive. It's in a dodge Dakota Scotty which is a super rare three axle rv kinda like the little toyotas. I realize from from research that I will need to get a In take and carb. I will probably add headers but can use the exhaust manifold that's on it. I figured the 318 would work I'm just wondering if the trans will fit too.

Not without a Sawzall and a welder. The trans is bigger in diameter and longer. The LEFT exhaust manifold will not fit.

This is an up grade, not a down grade.

How's the 440 mounted? Biscuit mounts, spool mounts, elephant ears?

The trans requires reworking the tunnel, as mentioned, or using a 727/904.

The drive shaft gotta get modified.

Pick your fuelling method and exhaust method, then use "search"; those are covered extensively already.

If it's an (A500) 42RH trans it fit fine without mods to the tunnel on my 73 Dart, but it does require modification of the cross member under the trans because the A500 is longer. (it's not too bad)
The shift linkage usually works fine and you are going to need an 80 inch speedo cable.
There may be an output shaft yoke issue, but there is very little info on them that I can find.
