I have a thread under suspension with some various questions and was intending on using a 5.7 hemi in my 72 demon that I just purchased. Lately i am second guessing the use of the 5.7 hemi for a variety of reasons. I also have in my possession a 400 block and a 318 magnum out of a dakota.
I realize i can use any of the three but it's a matter of choosing the right one. I have the 400 because i've built a nice one for one of my offroad rigs that pulled like a monster and took a beating. I have the 5.2 because I pulled it from a Dakota I needed for parts. The 5.7 hemi I bought from a wrecked cop car. The intent was to put it into a buggy chassis I was building.
I got out of "wheelin" and decided to dive into the car scene which is why i purchased my demon. I always like the demons since I was a kid. REALLY liked the General Lee but aint got the coin for that.
So now I need to decide on an engine. pros and cons for all three but I really like the idea of using that 5.2 and making it nasty with a turbo.
5.2 is light and with a Hughes Engines fuel rails, intake, throttle body and some aluminum heads I could use a megasquirt III system ( which I have and was going to use on the 5.7 hemi ). I like the compact size of the 5.2, I like that fact that it really is an overlooked engine, and I like the fact that I can machine the block, use stock stroke so it will REV like a bumble bee, use a LA forged crank and get some forged pistons to have a bullet proof bottom end. I would use a girdle and studs for the mains and the heads.
My questions for you turbo guys are as follows:
1. I KNOW megasquirt III will control a boost controller as well as handle the fuel mapping. That's why I Bought it.. i intended to boost my 5.7 hemi. What I DON'T know is how to control the timing. The 5.2 has a dizzy. With the 5.7 I could set it to control the timing and retard if according to boost levels. How would I control the timing on the 5.2 ? I intend to drive it around with 6 to 10 lbs of boost but then when i want to run it at Brainard or "play" I want to be able to kick it up to 15 lbs or more.
2. How much boost will a 5.2 block handle running 8 to 1 compression based on the bottom end I described above.
I appreciate any and all help you can give me. I need to make up my mind on my motor choice so I can commit and start acquiring parts.
thanks again
