I assembled a 340 a couple years back I had the block crank and heads sitting around . I have about a grand in machine work including heads, and what nickle and dimes you are the internals gaskets, hardware, cam oil pump etc. so lets say 1500 ish but add the price of a good core on top of that...plus labor if you dont do the assembly yourself. but all things being equal the price of the core is the difference. And its a gamble on a 340 buy as a core isnt it?

a core is 800+ needing sleeves.. or 1500-2000 bare needing machining.. (unless you get real lucky) a guy near me has/had a block up needing 4 sleeves...1k...

Thinking about 340 cost ,Id say for a good running engine or specifically one that has been rebuilt to a pro standard, 6 grand and that may be a realistic low cost estimate.

I'd like to add that 6 grand to a true racer is just another few dollars spent. But that's the difference guys who truly go fast and the guys who say they go fast for "cheap"... its two different definitions of fast theres 14 second fast and 10 second fast

And the debate will always go on...
Small block V8 guys will almost always disagree with the slant 6 guys.
The 318 guys will disagree with the 273 guys.
The 340 guys will disagree with everyone and feel their engine is the best of all no matter what.
The 360 guys disagree with them all because it is cheaper to build one with more power in the long run and the cores are cheap.
Then there's the big block guys that feel that you are wasting your time and money with a small block or slant 6.
Then there's the stroker engine guys that say that is the only way to go both small and big block.
Let's not forget the turbo guys who put them on everything and say that is the only way to go.
Then there's the gen 3 hemi guys insisting that this is the best combination.
Then (of course) there is the gen 2 426 Hemi guys that are always going to be king of the castle!

Sheesh, give it a rest already...
......yet all the Chevy guys get along and respect one another. Makes you wonder.

One of my sons and I have been thinking seriously about a 318 build for his D100 short bed. Why 318? He wants gas mileage. Right now he has a wornout 360 magnum, and we think we can easily out power it with a mild 318, and use less gas.

The main thing holding him back, is that we have everything to put a nice 360 together except a cam.

318s are great for a truck that is what they are designed for, utility especially the 3 barrel LA version. A friend of mine had a 92 Dakota with a 5.2 and that pickup cruised rather nicely.

It seems to only be a few guys here... i just ignore them now. I would rather see someone build something interesting than the same old thing. The slant 6 colt on the b-body forum is WAY more interesting than a 600hp 440...

Even launching a /6 is more interesting :)

Same, you hear a guy doing 11/12's in a /6, 273, 318 and your ears perk up.

That's a cool little car.

I like the 318willrun's type builds what can you get out of it doing minor mods especially to mostly stock parts.

yeah, that colt is "Hyperpak"'s on fbbo guy does some cool work, the motor is pretty trick.. the head is milled something like .300

Call me what ya will...
Btw, I don't own any 318's at present but do have a /6 in a Dart, 2 V6's in Dakotas and a..........wait for it........360! The 360 doesn't run on gasoline though :D There's 2 more engines in my shop. A fresh 440 and a not so fresh 327.

I sold my last teen 2 years ago to a family member who had a 49 Plymouth that its in now. I got to the point where Ill never use it. It's a good runner has fresh internals. I liked keeping them around cause they drop in in place of a 340, same internal balance. All you need is the mount ears, everything else bolts on.

Can't believe I'm in this thread.... (roll'n my eyes)
Guys with 318's aren't the issue. Look at every 318 thread. The guy with the 318 usually says he wants to rebuild it, or add a little power for fun.. and immediately the "non-318" guys come a running saying "waste of money... get a 360 or you'll hate the hobby.... you must be a UTG lover.... yaddy yaddy yaddy"

Now, tell me where the issue lies....

Sir, i love my 318.. but to not confuse me with a heathen that would support a man that smells like catfood and a wet ashtray.... If i had feelings i would be offended.

I'm offended at those that want to blow us up, and our children. I'm offended at those that are invested in the destruction of this country. I'm offended at those that want to destroy Christianity and Faith, especially in our children. What I'm NOT offended at is some guys that want to mess with a 318. In fact, let me under the hood, I'll join them :)

100% plus the 318 guy's aren't anti 360 or 408 or whatever (maybe 2 are :) ) and trying to get people to build a 318 instead were just more openminded, if what the OP wants can be accomplished with a 318 or whatever engine and he is fine with any negative side effects then we try help him out to accomplish his goals.

Plus like you said most just want 200-300 hp some up to 350 hp but rarely 400-500+ hp where the argument is always taken to.

Most every engine thread and especially teen threads end up talking about maximum horsepower. Half the time the OP states in his first post that he just wants to make it more fun, not to turn it into a race car or build a Nascar powerplant for it.
