yeah, i know what current market is on 340's (i just bought one) and i also know what my local machine shops charge. you'd have to shop smart, do a lot of leg work and invest most of the sweat equity but i *think* you could get there for 5 G's.

but just from a line item point of view, if you bought a virgin block for 1300 and needed to go 20 over you're gonna already be half that budget on a short block by the time it's all said and done.
What I don’t understand is the diverse range in machine shop service pricing.

I don’t feel I know enough to look at a block and not get ripped off-even with a magnet and a quart of iron dust. Buying a used block seems like a real gamble, and that is every 340 block

How much is it decked?
Cracked?
Is that top ridge so bad it needs an odd size bore?
Warped or tolerances on the wrong side of the bore lean? (Can’t think of the proper verbiage)
I’m not sure if I could tell if the main caps could come from another engine (340) and not match. I remember Dvorak flipping his **** when I mentioned a block without main caps-bout told me to **** off
Plus a half of a dozen other faults I’m sure the senior guys here could tell us.
