I am starting to get cornfused with my friends 360 that runs like a turd. This is a brand new crate engine, has 125 psi compression in all cylinders, new 6-AL box, tryed 2 new carbs - 750 holley and 650 edelbrock ( brand new), and its a turd, it wont even spin the tires. I have the timing cover off and am going to check cam timing this weekend as well as top dead center. Timing is 12 degrees at idle and 32 at WOT. Any thing that I am forgetting about? It fires right up and idles fine. I assume this thing should throw you back in the seat till you let up.thanks. Don

Is this a Mopar Crate engine ? If so its either 300ho or 380hp. The 380hp version needs some gearing like 3.91s and a loose converter.

Theres More To Car Running Fast Than Just The Engine. Trans, Convertor, Gearing?

Which crate? 125psi may be low, but if it's only been fired and beaten on, it may not have seated the rings properly. The smaller carb, and keep the timing conservative, and go put 500 miles on it before you get too far into the beatings.

well I looked at this some more. Cam centerline is 109 and TDC is TDC on the balancer. So while I had the dial indicator out I put it on top of the valve spring retainer to see how far the valves where being opened which I thought should be some what close to .484. Well they are all over the place. Acouple are around .175 and 4 or 5 around .250 and the rest .385. I figured the lifter may be collapsing alittle but the next thing is the intake is coming off after Turkeyday festivities. Has anyone found a really good break in lube? And would you put a Hughes cam in it? thanks. Birdtracker

Whos crate motor is this ? Is it a Mopar Perf. motor ? If so it so be a Hyd roller it wont need break in like a flat tappet cam would.

i think you may want to break this thing in kinda gental like some say 500 miles or so dont stomp it to death i remeber when my buddy groke in hie 383 spr be at baylance race way oh dont worry he said the book said half throtle 2 times then 3/4 next pass and your all good pass one elc.issue pass 2 muffler blows off pass3 grand national gets us at end track s... then to top it off driving back home volcano eruption nearly through the hood spun bearing. sorry off track here break in slow itl pay off:happy10:

its a Mopar Performance crate motor, and tag part # says 360 c.i and 360 h.p. I believe it has a hydrualic cam. I will know more when the intake comes off. I have never raced a hyd cam and really think you would be asking for trouble. Birdtracker

All the info provided points to the original 360/360HP Mopar Commando crate engine. An NOS engine assembly? They haven't made those since the early to mid-'90's. The .484" lift cam is a flat tappet hydraulic and heads should have 2.02" intake valves.

The engines came with OEM style, but HD version stamped rockers on a shaft. Make sure all of the rockers have a little preload on them. If not, that may show wiped cam lobes. The lift check at the retainer won't show near .484" lift because of a lower actual rocker ratio than the advertised 1.5 along with some possible lifter collapse. But some of those numbers are pretty low.

I had one of those older Mopar crate motors 360HP and it ran pretty good even with a 3.23 rear gear, but I did have a high stall. It had no problem smokin the street tires.

I have the 390HP 360 with 3.91 with a 2500stall converter. It won't spin the tires either.
The power doesn't come on till 3000rpm, and by then I'm 20-25mph.
My guess is a 3200 stall minimum is needed.

You can't use the dial indicator on the rocker. The lifters bleed down and you get what you found. The 125psi seems low to me, but again, that might just be the way this one is right now. The 484 cam is rather large, but I'd expect to see 140 at least. Do a leak down on it and see what the rings are like...
