Hey guys have a few questions and need some help choosing on a cam for my 383. Car is 69 383 barracuda formula s, 4 speed, 3.55 sure grip, all steel body. Don't know weight, I'm guessing with me around 3600-3700. Car will be used to play at the track and cruise around, not a daily driver just a fun car, having said that still want to have a decent idle and be reliable. Would like to get the car into the 12s, suspension will prob hold me back as ss springs will prob be it. Engine is 383 .030 over, stock rods and crank .010 on rods and mains, arp bolts, kb 400 pistons .005 in the hole, moly rings, full groove mains, 906 heads 89cc, 2.14 1.81 valves, new 3 angle and back cut on valves, heads ported-flow sheet shows 279cfm at 525 on intake, 189 around the same on exhaust. Measured compression with .045 head gasket came to 9.7.1. Using isky 1.5 adjustable iron rockers, street dominator intake port matched, 750 holley vs. Have some comp single springs and isky double springs depending on cam type. Howards edm solid lifters. Headders will be try-y 1 5/8. Question as far as lift on the cam - I would think I should pick one with lift numbers as high to a little bit higher then my max intake flow? The cams that have been suggested to me or found on cam quest are in the 236°-243° duration at .050, a few are larger. Comps 282s, xs274s, xs282s, lunati 30230740, also thinking about the mp 528 after reading Andy f book and other reviews on this cam. Thoughts, suggestions... and thanks in advance.

What style cam would you like? Hyd, hyd roller, solid, solid roller?

The .528 cam is a great cam. Nice idle. Very streetable. I've used it twice. Both cars went 11's.

I like the crane 689541 . Not sure if you want a roller or not though.

With the 3.55 gears I would err on the side of torque. The 383 is a great engine but is easy to over cam.

Are you dead set on staying with a flat tappet? I used to run one in my 360, then I changed a few things by adding a solid roller. I'm never going back to flat tappet again. No break in and no worries.

but he's running a stick. it can handle more cam then with the auto. I would love to do a 4 speed set up with my 383. I bet it would be a freaking blast to drive.

I've thought about going roller, I don't know what the reward/cost would be worth it? Youngun, what is your combo, how much vacuum and hows the idle with that cam.

I tell you what, I really like the 528 Mopar cam. It's a damn good one. As said, because of the 383's short stroke, they are easy to over cam.

Thanks rrr, my only concern with the mp cam is quality control. From what I've gathered it pulls great vacuum idles good and runs like a champ.

Then you can always pick something similar from Lunati. That's what I would do. Just make sure the duration @ .050 and LSA are real close.

Hughes 4650bs solid is what I run in my 383.
duration @ 050 246 in 250 ex lift 576 in 588 ex.
works well with my ported hp 915s. 2.14 in and 1.74 ex. why did I keep 1.74 ex. ask herb.
3800 stall and 4.56 do the job well.
