Everything I find about putting a BB 383 in A body is for late, nothing that I found for early. What will it take? I want it to look like it came in there. I have a '66 Dart rag top I am going to buy, and I have been wanting to put in this 6.1 Hemi in it, but I can sell the 6.1 for good money. Money no factoring, of course it will, what will be easier? NOT how much power you can make. :burnout:MT

You absolutely can. Streetmaster makes or used to make mts for this (I have a set). 68-70 big block HP ex manifolds will fit with ease & flow well for what they are & likely max wedge manis will also ($$$ but flow better with smooth shapes/3" outlet) & I saw a pic of a '66 A with MW manis. go to the early A BB site here and also www.bigblockdart.com best would be a 400 with a 440 crank (451) or an offset ground 440 crank (470 cubes). you will for sure need subrame connectors & likely a partial roll cage to keep it from twisting. EDIT & the pic saw of the '66 was a 440 with the MW manis. MORE EDIT Scallop the pass side of the trans xmember so it is like the dr side so when you run your duals they wont have to hang down on that side to clear, so they will tuck up in there nicely. remove the trans tunnel pinchweld and reweld it for strength & a 727 may or may not clear with just that & some need the tunnel to be raised. Early A tolerances are the worse (but are my favs) so mockup with a bare block/trans to see what you need. best is an adapter that lets you use a 904 & cut off the bell part & it will then bolt to a big block for a perfect fit. (I have one), I forget the brand name & with the 904 being weaker you would need to build it stouter depending on your app (just remembered, it is an ultrabell)

I did what rapidrobert did, 451 in an Early A. All he says applies, B will fit better than an RB as its not as wide. Hi-po logs and streetmaster is the ticket. Youll be very close on steering shaft, may have to shim mortor over 1/4 inch. Use 3/4 nuts between K and frame to get tunnel off trans. It will almost drop in. Headers are tough, doubt if youll even want them.

What oil pan, how hard to find, How hard to find the A body logs?

iirc you want the 187 pan, it'll be the one that has the idler arm indentation on the pass side. www.bigblockdart.com will have the numbers for the manis you need. they are likely going for ~3-4 hundred (maybe less). they are OE BB HP manifolds on 68-70 apps

Always wanted to go B in my 65 cuda it's just the exhaust that stops me, 500/500 hp/lbs-ft 470 and 5 speed would be an awesome combo.

I have a 68 Dart with 440. Headers are a pain. Will be going thru that car soon. Exhaust will be on the list for the 68..

187 is the correct # for the pan & I just saw one for $120. the 68-70 mani #'s are 2951865 DR and 2899879 PASS & I just saw a set for $400. (both seem a bit high to me). Shop wisely!

Go 4 speed and you don't have to worry about the trans tunnel clearance. Plus, it's not boring to drive.

on the 68-70 HP manis, the 68/69 pass side is 2843992 and the 70 pass side is the 2899879 I previously posted. (the Dr is the same 2951865 on both). the outlet is turned 90 deg on the 70 pass side compared to the 68/69. A non issue if using custom ex. Pretty sure they are the same flowwise but I dont have both in front of me to compare for sure

did a 440 in a 64 valiant many years ago.. modified some c-body engine brackets and bolted it right to the k-frame int he proper location. now they make mounts to do it..

i just used the c-body pan with the little notch in it and the v-8 center link.. bolt in deal man.. trans tunnel needed to be clearanced some but that was easy.

i had custom headers made but there are other options.

Like it was made for it....B block, streetmasters and Hi-po logs.

look at my album for a bunch of pics. The red Barracuda is my friends and those are WIDE Hooker A fenderwells. Dont even try them. White headers are Pro-Parts (mazzolini)
