I recommend rhs heads for rhs call mike mrl performanec [517-569-2672] to do a rebuilt on j heads rhs same dollars.
Hey darndart, your build is similar to mine, except the compression.I,m only running 10.5 to 1 compression for pump ga$.I see you have an 8 inch t.convertor also. What stall? You should be in the mid 10,s no problem.Good luck.:cya:WOW! Very similar story to mine. I've also been bracket racing a 73 Dart Sport for the past 8 years with a 70 340, 10.5:1, home ported 915 J heads, MP 557, M1 single plane, backed by a 727, 8" converter, 4.10's, with a best of 11.90 @ 110 mph. I also wanted to go faster, so I started with an early 360 block had it fully race prepped(bored .040, honed with torque plate, decked, line bored, etc.) I bought a rotating kit from Coast High Performance that consists of a SCAT 4340 4" crank, SCAT 4340 H-beam rods, Probe flat tops(12.3:1), balanced. I pickep up a complete top end kit from a fellow racer that consists of profesionally ported Performer RPM heads(287 intake/212 exhaust flow @ .650, a Comp Solid Roller 269/276 @.050 w/.654/.655 lift, Comp lifters, Comp push rods, Comp magnum roller rockers, Super Victor intake, and a 950 HP Holley. The rest I'll be reusing. I'm shooting for mid 10's. Hopfully I've got enough HP to get me there!
I have built 4" arm engines with iron heads that were built with low compression and the future plan of upgrading heads. They have enough steam on iron to run into the tens with a hydraulic cam... But that's with porting the heads, race gearing and tires, and that car has to be a bit lighter... including adding in the weight of the safety stuff (cage, belts, etc).

This is where I don't get it...
.......some guys need to run 260 duration rollers in an A Body to get 500 HP ( ~ 10s in a 3500lb car) ...............and other guys reckon it can be done with a mild Hydraulic stick.8-[
10.5 ET in 3500 lb car = 600 rear wheel horsepower using this HP/ET calculator : http://www.wallaceracing.com/et-hp-mph.php
figure 10% losses through the transmission and differential
you will need at least 660 HP at the flywheel!!
My 11.9 second 3400 car makes 400 Rear wheel HP or about 440-450 at the flywheel with a small .509 lift hyd cam 340 (about 1.3 HP per Cubic inch).
408 X 1.3 = 530 hp
530 (.9) = 477rear wheel hp will net an ET of 11.21 in a 3400 lb car.
Not exactly ten's, but faster than 11.9.
I am putting togethor a similar setup:
408 10:1
J heads Cleaned up
xs282s cam
750 holley
M1 intake
3200 stall
727
3.91 gears
1 5/8 header's 2.5" exhaust
28 X 9.50 slicks
Msd ignition
3600 Lb Dart Hoping to be somewhere in the 12's

in 12.56 with a stock stroke 360, stock 1.88 intake heads and 3.23 gears - if you are inthe 12's you did something wrong!
Well I would be tickled,But they would not let me on the track again without the stuff needed for 11.99 or faster.
Find out this summer.
Still have alot of work to finish up.
To start out I am taking a set of 2.02/1.60 J-heads (915's) I had on my street car several years ago to the shop to have them rebuilt. The comp cams kit comes with springs, retainers, keepers and seals, so they will be all new except the castings and valves.
I was hoping to buy something nicer, but am starting to run out of resources.
Maybe later I can upgrade to something better: eddy's, RHS-X, W-2, etc.
I got a set of OOTB eddys with about 4k miles on them that I am willing to let go if you want to lighten up that frontend a good bit. Let me know if you are interested and I can come up with a price.
Lift at the correct piston travel. This is where I don't get it...
