.....Car has factory 360, 727 and 3.21s in it now.......I can pick up a 10.5-1 408 short block for a decent price........would it be worth installing it with a mild hydraulic cam, 1.88 stock heads and stock dual exhaust in a 75 duster or should i just leave as is , would this combo run low 13s............kim...........

Won't be a revver, but still be fun, always can upgrade top end later. I'd only worry about the compression is 10.5:1 with closed chamber or open chamber heads.

............open chamber 587s........prolly use the .051 8553 felpro head gskt to knock it down alittle.........kim.........

If you left in drive,mid 13s.Tire smoke everywhere.A basic,fresh long block,done right 5k plus.My homebuilder,blueprint 408 cost 7k+ years ago Kim.

I still maintain the 4" arm small block A body is the best all around street car. If it's reasonable, do it! If it was me and it would bolt in, run it as is. No need for a "smaller cam" in them. They still idle and behave well at low rpm with what most catalogs would call "too big". If you havent' driven one, find one and do so. They really, really are fun to drive.

I agree, grab it. While the heads are a limiting factor in the performance, IMO, you won't really care to much and a upgrade later can always happen.
Sell the 360 to recoup the money spent or to a upgrade on the car/engine or whatever later.

i know a guy running a 416 with 308 heads 2.02 and a 480 hyd crane it sounds real tame almost stock sounding and that thing is a torque monster rolling 30 mph 2nd smoke shows its all over by 5800 also

......Thanks guys...my daughter is wanting to race and thinks the car will too slow being its a 75.......This is my 40,000 mile street car so i wouldnt sell off the original motor and tranny..........the stroker has a Hughes solid with 582 lift, so it will have to come out for now........i think it would a be pretty radical cam for the street....i do have a decent 3500 stall to put in.....kim.........

4" stroke will give you big block torque way down low even with stock heads and mild cam. Loads of fun to drive and you can put some better heads on it later.

EQ's, RHS or Eddy's would be a good choice

My 408 is currently in the process right now at the local builders. I had a little delay because Scat sent the wrong main bearings with my stocker kit. Still waiting for the right ones to show up. I moved on from a worn out, over bored 340 to a fresh 360 block. I got the block off craigslist for $275. From a guy that snagged it from a different speed shop that took ownership of it when the machine work was done and never paid for. So far I have invested in the block $275 and the stroker kit for $1500.

I’m hoping my machinist bill will only be around a $1000. After bored .030 over, decked, mains honed for studs, cylinders plate honed with studs, and assembly of the short block. Luckily I will be reusing everything from the 340 like my cam, Eddy heads, intake and all the little stuff like balancer and flex plate also. I also popped $1500 for an F.A.S.T ez efi system. I’m including that in the build cost because it’s just something extra that I didn’t really need but wanted. Winter is coming fast here in Nebraska. At this point I’ll have to do the initial break in from the garage and may have to wait for spring before she sees the road. When all said and done I’m hope for at least 400hp but hopefully more to the wheel. It needs to replace the power of my 340 on nitrous.
