426 stroker, is it reliable?

They definitely a blast to drive. Blows the tires at will. I thoroughly enjoyed my 442ci. But can't wait for the new 444ci to show up. Same block and heads, bigger cam more compression on pump gas.
Like to hear more about this 444ci motor. Care to share ?
 

55,000 street miles and 700 runs on my scat cast crank 408. Cylinders looked fine. No taper ans still round. bearings were toast but that wasn’t the engines fault.

Dead thread revival! Just curious.. it's been 7 years.. did that motor finally give up one day?

Pretty old thread, my guess it's fine, use to be a big worry back in the day that a stroker would wear out abnormally quick, which time has obviously proven faults.

True.. but he should have well over 100k on it if it's alive.. i'm just curious :)
 
Just last fall ran 11.17 at 120 mph. Less street miles put on it each year now. Plan on running SickWeek next year with it.Spinning it to 6400-6500 on the shift and 6700-6800 at the stripe. About 40-50 passes a year? Maybe more. Definitely more.

That's awesome... so that motors like 10-12 years old.. nice to see how it held up :) I was sitting here staring the the 426 kit... but.. i don't need stupid power, might just stay with the 360 since i just beat on my stuff going to work
 
Block and crank and rods are from the original blueprint crate motor bought in 2009. Refreshed it once, during a piston change to bump compression. Was going to pull it to check how the rod bearings looked over the winter, but got busy. I have ZERO concerns over the longevity of a 4” stroke small block that is well put together.

That's great to hear.. if i do it i will prolly use a CNC forged it.. although that 426 isn't much more money.. soo tempting :)
 
I would have gone forged, but blueprint didn’t offer the option. I’m getting closer to the magical HP limit for cast crank even though very smart people say I worry too much. I have the option to go roller cam, but I also need to investigate putting a bar in it.

Great news, but what's your maximum limit with a cast crank?

Displacement can also gives you more down low power (idle-3000+ rpm) that you can't get any other way NA, especially good if you want to run a high rear gear eg.. 2.76-3.23 more low rpm torque gonna be your friend. You don't have to make a 600+ hp beast with a 426.

Yeah... i have 4.30s right now but i know they will get old fast... i was thinking with 426 or 408... easy torque, not needing a nasty cam and plenty of power for street fun without being horrible to drive.. Not everything has to be max effort :)

I have like 30 miles on the 4.30s and i know i will get sick of them in a few weeks.. drdiff has 3.23s or 3.55's for $195..

A 426 with 3.23 gears will put similar torque to the ground as 318 with 4.30 gears IF BOTH are making the same torque per cid.

Eg.. say 1.25 lbs-ft per cid

426 x 1.25 x 3.23 = 1720 lbs-ft
318 x 1.25 x 4.30 = 1710 lbs-ft

About 550ish?
450-500 is more than enough for me.. my 318 might make 375 on a good day and it moves pretty good... i have no idea on the bottom ends milage though, it was a temp motor i threw in to get the car moving. Turned out to be a decent motor (other than the cam bearings, which we won't talk bout)

It would be correct. But both would have to be making the same amount of torque per cid which is possible but unlikely in your situation. A property built 426 is most likely gonna make a higher lbs-ft per cid than a stock bottom end 318 which means you could go with an even higher rear gear (2.76-2.94) and have similar torque to the ground.

I have just never seen tq to the ground figured out before :)
 
Mathematical exercise sure, but REALLY useful? Not really. You upper rpm is probably pretty close to the same, but how you doing on the highway with your 4:30’s? To be clear I run a low first gearset and 4:10’s with a 26.5 tall tire. First gear is a blink of the eye if it hooks.

I will never go on the highway, car will spend it's time doing 6 miles trips to and from work... 30" tires on it also..
