440 vs 360 Weight Analysis.

JYH.. i can pull my headers in and out without taking anything else out or lifting the motor.... Spark plugs are pretty much staring me in the face... there's a lot more room :)
compared to an early A with a V8 i could cut figure 8's with a big rig in that space!

if it weren't for the t-bars i could probably drop the headers straight out the bottom.

i think this is the juncture at which we start discussing gun drilled axles, no?

Actually... we should talk diets.... I see guys with super light cars and they themselves are pushing 250+ pounds... It seems losing 100# of fat would be a good start before worrying bout the car :)

What are you going to use the car for street?
Drag race only?

You can get bigger torsion bars to make it handle better. As long as it's not a drag only car and with fenderwell headers so it can have a decently sized front tire.

As said you can make more power to get it moving, way more torque when comparing stock stroke of a BB to a SB engine.

Let's add an Indy low deck aluminum block to this equation.
The entire engine 475- 500#'s. lol.

I'll take the extra 150 #'s for the extra 80 - 100 cubes. lol
How much cylinder head is necessary to reach the BB potential. 500-540 ci?

There is a 540 ci Challenger that runs mid 9's consistently, and leaves the light like he's going through a crosswalk...

when i was racing motorcycles i always joked with the bigger guys that they needed a "tuning by slimfast" program.

My 451 B fit in my narrow '65 A. with 1/8 inch on the passenger side for the hi-po log manifold. I had to grind the casting numbers off the side so it wouldnt vibrate against my inner fender and that was with solid motor mounts and after shimming to clear the steering shaft. They are tight in old A's! Went back to a lighter 408 as I didnt have AL heads on either. Don't let the haters derail this, some guys just post to excercise their one sided egos. I just put them in the ignore file and move on with a smile.

I worked on Tim's road race Valiant project for a few years. We weighed everything.

Bout time you did somethin.
look, buddy, i cain't spend all my time imparting my divine wisdom upon the great unwashed masses, debunking piss poor hot rod folklore and **** posting. at some point my paws itch for grease under the nails and the feel of a smooth snap on ratchet.

however i think i met my quota for the next three months over the weekend.

Looking at the first post .
Wasn’t the difference in weights of both engines about a 100 pounds ?
Maybe a little more ?

I’m not arguing against the SB or the BB .
Both have their place .

But in an A body,,,SB is always less cumbersome to deal with .
Be it the weight or just changing the plugs .
If it’s the weight you are concerned with ,,,,spending dollar for dollar on the SB ,,,the BB will always weigh more .
Unless you buy an aluminum block for the big motor,,,,you can never touch the weight savings of the SB .

wouldn't 'glass fenders, hood and bumper along with aluminum bumper brackets offset the difference? plus a lot of that weight is further forward than the motor so even better for handling.
neil.
Nope.. gotta get rid of the bumper and cut the frame back as much as possible... quick #20+ gone :)
