I've done my research, listened to you guys, and decided NOT to buy a crate motor.
Found a good local Mopar builder and plan to drop off my 340 at the first hint of winter.

I would love a "build sheet" from you experienced guys including everything I need to make an honest 475 HP at the crank.
My Demon is a 4 speed, 4:10 rear and no power brakes.
It will do a few passes in the summer at the drags, but mostly cruises. I'm not worried about "streetability", and a nice radical idle is a must.

Help me out, fellas....winter's coming:-)

Good build and an honest 480hp. With an electric water pump/950hp and some other small changes it made 500hp 526tq

I'd guess in car HP with mufflers was about 470ish

Solid engine that runs real good. Has a good aggressive idle.

I might add that if I go with aluminum heads, I'd like 11:1 comp. With Brians iron heads I'd probably want to stay around 10.5 :1.

Already have an AirGap, Hughes rollers and Doug's headers.

What about solid vs. hydraulic cams? Always had solid lifters in my big cam motors in my past life. I'm a bit leary of hydraulics over .550 lift.

Heres my build for ya'..'71 340 block 30 over decked and line honed
mopar 4" cast crank
eagle rods
Diamond flat top 11.9 to 1 comp. pistons
Lunati .533/.552 HYD. cam
Edelbrock 65 c.c. heads
Comp roller rockers
Edelbrock air gap intake
Quickfuel 850 carb
full msd ignition...

This combo made 520 h.p. and 500 lbs of tq...only using a HYD. cam and the heads were barely touched, can only imagine what it would have run if the heads had any serious work done to them..my '70 duster "street car" weighting 3450 with full interior and through a full exhaust, running 3.91's went 11.0's@120 all day long..:):)

Thanks for all the info guys. Really appreciate it. I toyed for awhile with the crate motor idea, but spending 7 grand and not REALLY knowing what's in there would eventually kill me.

I was perfectly happy with my warmed up 340, until my buddy Rick, finally talked me into a "quick ride" in his 750 HP, 9 second Demon. Scared the crap outta me. I certainly don't want to spend 20 grand on an engine like his....but it left me wanting a bit more. You know what I mean.

I've got a couple months to continue researching the parts list, but I have a good start.

p.s. Check Ricks car at the local strip on YouTube. Just type in 9 second yellow demon. It's from last year, BEFORE he bumped compression and put on new heads! Awesome

Forgot to ask 'ya which rods and are you running pump gas? I can run 105 octane fairly cheap, but at 11:1 with aluminim heads and the right cam, 93 would do fine. I think.
