Removing the starter from a '64 Dart with a 273 4-speed is quite an experience. There's a lot crammed into the left side of the engine next to it . . . steering shaft, z-bar / clutch linkage, and that darn exhaust manifold with the extension that wraps around the steering shaft. I'm needing to lift the engine off the mounts and move it over. What a pain to get the starter out.

They were packed really tight the 1st couple years. I run a newer starter on mine because of the big size difference.

Hummm....It's been awhile since I pulled one in my car but I don't remember it being too much of a pain. I remember having to turn the steering to just the right spot to get clearence but nothing else.

And using a very long extension to get the back bolt. I agree with chryslerfat. I installed a Dakota starter too. Easier to get in and out. tmm

Here is what I did,

Top bolt was a ***** with the old starter, I got it out and sat the starter on the C-Link. Crawled out from under the car , turned the wheel all the way to the pass side and the starter hit the floor. The mini went in like a hotdog down a hallway. I do suggest you get a 5/8 half moon or Cwrench. it makes that top bolt a lot easier to tighten. I got a whole set for 12.99.

Just like you said 65Vart, I turned the steering all the way to the passenger side, and CLUNK, it dropped out, onto the floor. I bought a Dakota starter for it. A few bucks more, but way smaller and lighter. I'm still going to lift the engine and move it over to get the exhaust manifold out though.
