for several reasons, considering changing the throttle to cable type. (65 /6 dart, console auto,)friend has many bone cars , mostly 73-up dusters, but also 67 up A bodies. dart is floor shift. just wondering if any surprises anyone can steer me away from!?? i know to get all throttle and kickdown stuff, wondering if the kickdown lever is any different from older to newer 904's??? thanks for any advice.

With a rod throttle linkage, if a motor mount breaks, it can get bad very fast. Never forget the gas pedals and brackets also.

I could be mistaken but I remember the rod linkage rotation being opposite of engine rotation on early A slants. Meaning when they torque up on a bad mount it closes throttle instead of opening.

Unless you are changing to a supersix setup why change what works properly. Even if you are changing to a 2bbl carb you can turn it sideways and retain your rod linkage. Search for threads on parallel slant carbs if you are interested.

I am looking at making a bracket system for mine that allows me to retain the rod style pedal and kickdown but have cable to carb. The rod will effectively pull a cable just forward of the firewall which when then travel to carb. My reason is oddball carb choices.

several reasons: rod style problems: gas pedal feel apart, availability of replacement, the bushing on end of throttle rod ( yes it is reproduced). availability of carb for rod style, everyone with knowledge of both vote for the cable style.

I suspect for direct bolt-up, you need a 64-66 pedal and cable, which was only on V-8 cars in 64 & 65. I am sure a later one can be adapted. Indeed, I was picking over a 64 Valiant in a junkyard recently and noticed that it had a cable throttle, but not the original V-8 one. Someone had hacked some holes to make it work.

I think any tranny kick-down will work, since the engine & tranny layout never changed. The cable shift shouldn't interfere. The kickdown does vary between 2 & 4-bbl carbs. The early A's used a pivot plate bolted to the aft side of the head. Later engines had a simpler design, with the pivot mounted to the intake manifold bolts.
