65 Barracuda Gasser + 1956 325 Dodge Hemi Build

Jeff, many thanks for the encouragement. So glad to hear about your wife too.

I believe the adaptors are to transition to larger tubes for the headers. If not I'll find out.

they are for a different manifold flange style...

I'll answer that, since I built/assembled the engine. Bottom line, the headers are hand built by a super fabrucator....Bob Williams. This is his project, I just have the pleasure of the final build. Header bolts on the small block are a bit challenging...so make an adapter plate and build the headers to fit and ease of wrenching. I'll get the headers and include a couple of pix...on Chips site of the "cool looks" of the exhaust. No other real reason, we just have the ability to create...and do so at will! Also note, the intake is an old dual quad, with the top hand made to incorporate a Viper throttle body, with a magnium fuel injection processor, hand built wiring harness. Like everything else, just have fun...create and wonder what we can do next...Wait until you see the air intake system...Better yet the whole darn CAR!

Work continues on the assembly of the lil' hemi. We checked and recorded all the rod bearing clearances, so basically the bottom end is all done now. Got the front end of the engine all figured out with the new (modern) balance damper and timing chain....everything fits! Timing marks are off, but that is an easy fix with a new pointer to be mounted on the timing cover. Cam is in ( a solid lifter re-grind by Chris Nielson, in Utah). So on to all the little things to make the short block complete. A couple of pics follow..........thanks to all for your prayers too, Chip

Loving this build. Man it's coming along nicely. Just saw the part about your lymphoma so will be praying for you Chip. God is bigger than your lymphoma, God bless.

thanks for the kind words and prayers......indeed the build is progressing nicely. Hope to have more news and pics this week.

Well, finally back to the building thing......what with all the hospital stuff and chemo.
We assembled the heads, got them on and torqued and even ran the valves on the solid lifter cam. My engine came with the (rare) adjustable rocker arms and it sure made setting the valves easier. Intake and exhaust each were set at .022" per cam specs and everything still rolls over smoothly.
The pics show the size of this baby elephant and even being the smallest of the early hemis it is big! It will look awesome between the fenders of the A-body!
Keep you all posted........Best!

Please excuse me but I must share a few pics from today at Milan Dragway for the Detroit Dragway Reunion. I hope I don't offend anyone by posting these here :tongue7:.
The pics of the Color Me Gone (Roger Lindamood) car really brought back memories for me. After sneaking into Detroit Dragway in the late 60's with a couple of my other teen friends (before we could drive), I remember talking with Roger in the pits after a run and asking if there was anything I could do to help. He said "Sure kid" and handed me a spark plug wrench and said "change the plugs!". Wow! for a 14 year old kid that was already in love with drag racing, I had died and gone to heaven!!
It is always a great time seeing the old cars at these events. Enjoy!

We continue the build process and fitment of parts. I guess anytime you have a engine from 1956 and want to use "modern" parts as an upgrade you will have these types of challenges.
As you can see we have most of the cool stuff sitting on the long block now. I am using a new distributor that had to be lengthened to fit the old hemi. We checked to make sure the engagement was correct, etc. Couldn't help but sit the valve covers and intake on the long block.......just to take it all in! We had to make a new timing pointer for the modern balanced damper.
Next will be the oil pump, pan and final assembly of everything! wooohoo!
Best, Chip

looks good,,, is that a hot heads intake ?? and what are the carbs ?? at first i thought they were the old WCFB, untill iseen 3 in a row,,,,

Thanks, it is coming together. The intake is an Offy from Hot Heads. I used a VHT hi-temp paint on it and baked it in the oven.......don't tell the wife! I did a lot of searching and reading on tri-power carbs, older and newer alike and finally decided on the Rochester 2G's. They are somewhat plentiful and not too bad to work on and supposedly pretty reliable. There was some newer carbs out there that had some great features, but I would have had to get another loan to pay for them. I think the 2G have a nice look and fit the intake great.
Now that the "nice" season is here and the race track beckons we will continue the build in between burnouts and ET slips. Of course I will keep posting as progress continues........Best, Chip

Did some more good work on the engine. The final button-up stage has begun, meaning the "fitment stage" is over so all the things we do now are done! Great! Installing the balance damper (the right way!) Oil pump and swinging pickup installed and clearance checked. Oil pan on and torqued, gaskets, Loctite, thread sealant......all the good stuff to make it tight!
We have to make a shaft for the drill motor to drive the oil pump to prime the engine, so that is last.
Pics show the new timing pointer, re-grooved marks on the balance damper, some other assembly stuff and one with the hemi in the foreground and the newly built small block in the background.
The one pic shows a really cool Snap-on hemi clock sitting on top of the old hemi. That thing runs and makes open header sounds! Kept us inspired.

Some more pictures with additional accessories fitted. Just a few odds and ends and fitment issues to address before we can put the final touches to it. While we have it on the stand we'll do the plug wires, make sure the new starter fits, put the trans adaptor on and make sure the oil filter adapter fits with the headers. Then we get to spin the oil pump and get pressure and then take most of the stuff off before sliding it between the fenderwells. OK!

have any inside pics of the valve covers,,, interested in how the breathers are attached, thanks

Worked on the engine again last night and of course I forgot the camera ](*,).
We got the valve covers on and spark plug tubes in and lined up and spun the oil pump. Right off the bat we had 55# oil pressure. Good, but we ended up having to do some trouble shooting as we weren't getting any oil up top to the rockers. Rob is a great troubleshooter and soon had a calculated way to trace the oil flow. A little more cranking and we had oil gushing out everywhere. yeah! I'll remember the camera next time and bring you all up to date photo-wise the next time.
Fastfish.....I spent quite some time looking for the right color and size breathers for the valve covers. When I finally was satisfied there I carefully drilled the proper sized holes in the valve coves and inserted rubber grommets the size of the breather tube. I can't recall seeing another set like this, but I think they look great and go well with the other blue elements on the engine. I'll take some pics of the installation from inside the cover and show you......thanks for asking.
Best, Chip

Tonight we moved the engine from the engine stand to the chainfall so we could get at the back of the engine. Installed the last block plug over the camshaft end and began fitting up the trans adapter, crank hub adapter, flex plate and starter. All these little/necessary things take up some hours.
We found that since I had the crank flange tapped (1/2") at the machine shop that none of the flex plate bolts work.....so off to the hardware store tomorrow morning to get the right bolts. And it also meant we had to ream all the bolt holes out to 1/2". But now everything matches/fits. I have some pictures of the nights work.
I also took a close up of the push in breather on the valve cover showing the grommet attachment.
We are close to swinging it into the engine bay!!!! woooohoooo!
