71 Duster 360 (new project)

-
Waiting on some parts....just about out of pump gaskets and pump O rings...so I ordered 5 of each along with the small washers that go on the pump bolts....the pump is not completely bolted down....because of the missing washers...so yes...it will be a quick fix...LOL

i believe A&A transmission has those small thrust washer that go between the clutch pack and drive train...I think i bought a set...they had different thickness to reduce end play. Hard to find stuff on their website...not the most user friendly....

Dam..just got email from track...they canceled the friday night test n tune due to hot weather....

Well...Duster has carb converted to E85....going blind on this one for Saturday night race...plus mine has yet to run on E85...going to use set up on Dart ...

this ought to be fun....LOL

what was gray is now black....

I was thinking about converting to E 85 also. Let me know what you think because I will drive mine at least twice a week and have 22 gallon tank :)

i like it so far...only one car has run it so far...this weekend all 3 will have corn syrup in the tank...

out here in the desert...the Dart has run faster and more consist...and cooler...

That's always good. I'm fine with making conversion being its basically a new carb, but it's the ideal that fast sells efi that can switch from gas to 85 in a push that helps

Are they still running tomorrow Tony? Look's like temps in the 1 teens. I know you have this type climate, but 90's for a low temp is still pretty hot for racing.

yes...saturday night race still on...gates open at 8 pm...first time run at 9 pm....suppose to be between 116 to 119....cools off once the sun goes down...actually once the sun is down...not really that bad..

i took my Demon out to the track tonight and parked it for the evening...

started another thread....Saturday nigh is alright for racing....lol

112* outside temp on Excursion at 10pm tonight on South Las Vegas Blvd by Southpoint hotel & casino. Damn was hot today!

well...gotta a few thing to get done before end of August on this Duster..

one....remove and replaced cracked windshield..got new glass and gasket...tech guy been bitching..

going to pop the chrome and bust out of glass...get everything cleaned ...then get someone else to put it in....i think i have a friend who does windows....

then...the gas pedal is stiff...and has a hitch in it....the cable is new..and i changed out the pedals assembly since the old one was doing the same thing....going to have to climb in their and see if the cable is catching something....

found the problem with gas pedal..not the pedal at all..the carb...the link between the primary and secondary would jam back ...causing a momentary bind...few seconds with rotatory file and drill bit...bind is gone...

also adjusted hood...the hood was low back by the cowling...used some adjustable hood stop bumper ....sit even now...

gotta remove and replace windshield...i will remove it....and pay someone else to put the new one in......old windshield has crack...and another one starting.....a few minutes with hammer will take care of it.

popped the chrome trim off....always a pain in butt...even with HF tool...42 yrs of crap under trim.

a few smacks with a rubber mallet... prior screw driver between glass and rubber gasket...and out it comes.....

cleaned groove...got some new clips for molding on order... should have this all wrapped up by middle of next week...

well...working on the exciting stuff...put new reveal clips in the window channel...

now need to find someone to put in the new glass....

Got a set of 50 cc pumps for the E85 converted carb.....should help the lean misfire it has

Got the 50cc pumps on the carb today...

i was adjusting the pumps with the pink pump cams on the carb...and noticed that they did not fully compress the new pumps...replaced the pink cam with the brown pump cam that came in the kit...

Wow..what a difference.....the two E85 carbs i got from QFT have 50 cc pumps but have pink cams...

No racing until August 23.......

Couple of questions. Do you have the part numbers for the conversion parts for E85?
What kind of fuel line did you use? Any worries about corrosion with the fuel cell and lines if you used aluminum lines?

i am using steel braided line, the fuel cell is a RCI 8 gallon...polyshit...

conversion kit is from Quick Fuel Technology their metering blocks..

http://www.summitracing.com/parts/qft-34-106/overview/

you will also need stainless steel needle and seats....the accelerator pumps must be the newer GFLT material...and check to see what the floats are made out of....

I also installed larger 50 cc pump , and squirter with hollow screws...also installed a high flow power valve....

maybe some of these parts might not be needed on a street car...

Thank you for this. The car is far from a "Street" car mostly a race car driven on the street. I want to run E85 for when I start using nitrous that the octane will be closer to what it should be, even if I run a small cell for the race gas. Thanks again, looks like I need to get steel lines or braided. But if I stay classic 91, this is good info to have no matter what!

new AMD front windshield installed with new gasket...and chrome trim installed today...

Friend of mine had an account with local glass company...$75 dollars labor to install the windshield...

If I wanted to run a return line how would I do so, IF I was to set up the dual carb feed like you have? P.S., which fuel pump do you have? Trick flow or Summit? Is it loud or quiet?

holley black pump with holley regulator....i dont use return lines....

ok...changed out coil today...got rid of blaster 2 oil coil....went to a crane ps91 E coil....

got battery charger on Duster for the day......and went picked up 5 gallon of E85.....

$3.43 a gallon today...start filling up the tanks with corn syrup again...

well..saturday night did not go well for this duster....engine kept dying...adjusted carb....pulled valve covers....making noise.....we decided to park it...

sounded like a rod bearing clacking/banging/ metallic sound.....like number 6 or 8....

so today ...to check compression..all good...valvetrain all good.....pulled oil filter....did not look good..,,

and then drain oil.....could see copper/metallic color in it...

pulled heads off....removed short block....

installed NEW shortblock that was build a few years ago .....pretty much the same as this one..

kb107 pistons but has stock reworked rods...and has Engle Solid lifter cam...253/253 @.050 .575 lift with 1.5 rockers...

the short block coming out had a set of Eagle SIR rods in it......i was going remove them are put a set of scat rods in it before i put the engine in the car...but kept saying they would be ok....

well..I will know for sure early next week once i get to tear end down...

anyway..moving on....got the short block in and bolted to trans...cleaned the eddy heads up...will have the engine back together tomorrow....TnT Thursday night this week....Duster will be there....

Ok..got head on...pushrods..and rockers....headers on....

need to adjust rockers and put intake on...a few small other things...like find the hose clamp for the bottom hose....got new fan for it today also...lol
