95' when life was good!!!

-
We sure had it good fellas and didn't even realize it....well I looked around at the swap meet this weekend and the parts are thru the roof and the cars are astronomically priced....just saying
You offered that dude with the orange Ruster more than what I paid for a numbers matching 70 340 Challenger in 1979. I still got the Challenger! :D

Back in 2007 bought a 1972 Gold Duster slant six auto for a thousand bucks. Original owner, original paint and interior. Ran and drive good, A/C was not working, nothing else wrong with it.

I had really bumped my head hard that morning Jackie I'm glad you brought me back to my senses...that car had stage 5 cancer

I bought a Superbird in Myrtle Beach, SC for $3000 in 1985. I was at the beach on vacation, saw the car sitting in a Gulf station on Kings Hwy. I drove it home, restored it and sold it in 1988 to build my house. I sold it in Hemmings for $14K and thought I'd made a fortune! :realcrazy:
That 14k compounded annually at 7% for 47 years till now = $336,000.00

So you did make a fortune! Good work

But... back then a $ was a $ and now days it takes how many $$$s to make 1 $ !?????

IN the 70's, gas got high ( for back then), then was a shortage (I guess up North!)'
Then the 80s roll around, and the OLD "so called Muscle cars" of the 60s started to be noticed. CHEAP till someone says... these old hot rods might be worth a $ one day and then it begins! I could not swing a dead cat in rural Mo. without finding a V code E body project for sale..... cheap! All there, little rust, straight...cheap...90% of the purple! (I hate purple Mopars to this day!)
Then Wall Street took the big dive in what '88? The money guys pull out of Wall St. and have $$ to "invest" but where? somewhere. Where? Hemi Cudas, 70 LS " Chevelles, Boss 9 Stangs. Thats where. Such brings up the value of a 383 69 Roadrunner, a 68 440 Charger etc, etc. But still cheap.
It all rolls along till 91 into 92. Then the bottom falls out of the collector car market and the $ guys need to dump. Where? sell to an unknowing $$ guy!!! MA and all the mags keep telling everyone these cars are hot till the guys finds out ....Not anymore.
Then the $ guys are out and the hobbiest has hauled home every BB roller he can fund. But wait,,he wants to buy something else, better and he can not sell what he has! No one is buying and the little guy has no extra $. It takes more than a few years before the old Mopar market starts to rise about 10% a year.

Then the market rises and falls over time and a few decades, then good projects get harder to find and now they ask silly money for a roller than is not even a decent parts car. And on FM marketplace seems they all think a 50 year old 4 door than has not run "since parked" 30 years ago, is worth $10,000!
Maybe $10,000 today is the equivalent of $300 in 1985?????? Dunno!!!!!! (probably not!!!) :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead: :BangHead:

Bought my 69 GTS 383 4-speed in 1978 for $740 which I still have, this picture is from 1981 after I wrecked it and was getting it back together. In 1980 I bought this 70 Duster 340 4-speed for $1000, sold it to a friend and never saw it again, got the woman in 1981 and still have her too...

Only a few bargains for me because used cars were always a bit higher around here.
1968 GTS convertible running/driving $1,550 in 1983
1966 Barracuda Commando, four speed discs, handling package, etc. Some old coins worth about $200 at the time (late 1980)
1964 300K running/driving $600 late 1980s

What I missed out on:
1962 300 sport with "H" interior $600 in 1977
1970 Challenger R/T 383/slapstick $1,500 in 1977
1971 440+6 GTX $600 in 1982

The 300 and the Challenger really needed nothing. The GTX was missing the six barrel and a few common Satellite Sebring parts.

Hard pass:
1969 Charger 383/4sp $400 in 1977. This car was a running/driving, but not stopping absolute turd.

Ah the 60s! Life was good (except LBJ wanted to get rich off Viet Nam.) Cancel that statement, someone on here will call it political! Please delete!!!!!
Old used
muscles cars were everywhere IF you look for little. But a $ was a $ and no one made $50,000 -$80,000 a year! A loaf of bread was still $.30, A 70 Duster new was what? about $3000 tops???? But I worked all year for $7000 gross. Go figure!!???
Ah the 70s, gas gets more expensive and high interest rates. ( No 5-6% is NOT high!)
Ah the 80s ...Car are pretty boring. Well a 86 Vette goes around corners pretty good, and they are still cheap today!!!!
Ah the 90s.... all of a sudden muscle cars are worth $$$$ especially the "rare"ones the rich want! That is the ones at BJ.
Ah the 2000s. A rusted out ( NOT by todays standards!) 68-70 RoadRunner complete but a project ... so people want how much???? $2500-3000! Really!
Ah the 2010s,,,,, I woke up one day and I am an old man!!!!!
Ah the 2020s......every 4 door nothing roller is worth $10,000. But no one buys!!! Is that a hint idiots? What are these people smoking anyway!!???????????????????/

2000/2001ish I bought a 2dr 69 dart, slant car for 450 bucks and a 64 4dr slant car with perfect interior for 800....had some bondo repair but paint was decent. both ran and drove, but the 69 needed some help. both I let go to the junk yard...… I was stupid and young. Should have at least kept the 69 and the interior out of the 64. but I still have the grilles and taillights, dash, and other tidbits from both cars. The guy that came to tow them to the junk yard wasn't too happy about those bits missing.....well....you didn't ask on the phone...soooooooooo.

Yep, all that good livin'! Hard to believe I'm still alive, and with my girl since 1981. I have had over 300 A-Bodies since then, a lot of Sweptline pickups, and even a 69 Hemi Roadrunner and 74 Cuda 360 4-speed quadruple black I parted out in 1987!

well i bought a 70 mustang boss 302 for $1500 in 74 , sold it in 76 for $3250 and nearly bought a 62 shelby cobra 260 4spd , brit racing green for $2800 bucks , i looked at it hard and it would not put up with me behind the wheel , lol . yes i still kick myself on that deal , so i bought a 71 LT-1 vette in 1976 , beauty black t top stingray black leather , what a pile of junk . that was $6500 , but it got ripped off and the insurance paid me $8500 , woo hoo . this whole time i'm bought several mopars as well two 69 gts's , 69 rr , 66 sat commando , 70 rr , and building a 27 t roadster with a 383 4spd . and buying vintage speed parts when ever i had money left in my pocket , lol . and i must add this , to modify one of these cars was not even an issue , because there where everywhere , i remember car shopping back then an ever lot in town had several hp machines and the paper was full of them , in the 80's i bought at least 12 challengers , rt's , ralley's , se's and near paid more than $1500 bucks for any of them , of course non of them had a hemi , lol . but not today , lol lol ! here's a shot of a field of cars i had at once .

Our family’s 70 Go Mango 340 Swinger in 1991. Second owners since 1989. And me at same time and place at 10yo watching burnouts on Valley Mills road in Waco. The car is wearing the same paint from 1991 and the original vinyl top still. The motor is just a weeeeee bit different lmao… and I guess “technically” I’m the third owner after my dad.

Summer of '95 I was 15 and spent the summer working at my step-uncle's towing service. He had a personal junkyard and was mostly a Dodge truck kind of guy. He had some cars there though and I remember he had a '68 340 4 speed Formula S notchback Barracuda sitting out there. Exterior paint was worn and had hardly any rust anywhere, just needed to be cleaned up really. He said I could have it for 800 bucks. I didn't have the money at the time or I would have scooped it right up. To this day I wish I woulda got it.

1981 I bought my first car,1973 Dodge Charger, blue with white vinyl top and white bucket seats interior with console/slapstick. 400 4 bbl with 3.23 sure grip. $500. Sold it with a blown head gasket in 1983 and bought a 1970 Charger R/T, 440-4 speed with 4.10 Dana rear end. Had headers also. $500.

If I ever win the lottery I will recreate these two with a few modern touches.

At 17, I started working for the US Post Office straight out off high school graduation in 1973. I would look at the classified section of the Charlotte Observer whenever someone left one in the break room.
There was a Pantera for sale in Charlotte for $6300. I could have managed that no problem, but dang. At that age that seemed like a lot of money. My mistake.
Around 1978, I was working at a Chrysler Dodge dealership. They had a Porsche 914 for $6500. It needed a few stitches in the driver's seat so they had me drive it to the trim shop. Wow! I really liked it. Thought about that one for a day or so. Never saw it again. They said someone already bought it.

My first real hotrod 69 Swinger 340 auto 323 rear. Paid $700 in 76 2 years after graduation. Lotta Saturday light to lights. If I knew then what I know now...

Ahhh...reminiscing about the "good ole days!" I'll play too!

Bought my 69 Charger in 1978 for $1500. 383 car from the classic "little old lady." 32k miles (has 49k now). It didn't look too different than it does now in this pic other than it had those "deluxe" wheel covers. I have recently started what I expect to be a 2 year resto on it.

Bought my 71 Demon 340 in 1984 for $3500. 34k miles (has 38k now). I essentially paid sticker price for it when it was 13 years old. And glad I did!

It looked very much like this 1st pic that was taken when it left for it's body/paint resto in 2019. Of course the drivetrain was in it and the hood on it but you get the picture. I bought it as a running/driving car that needed very little but I wanted it to be much better hence the resto.
