Regarding the annual renewal of my 1996 Dodge Dakota in the state of Baja California Sur:
There is no renewal notice mailed. It is up to the owner/operator to remember to go down to the DMV office in January and renew registration.
The parking lot is very small and never an open spot. Park on the street and go inside to the computer room, get in line (10 minute wait), display your driver's license and registration card when it's your turn. A records check/printout is performed which verifies no outstanding tickets/warrants.
Take the records printout out to your vehicle and drive over to the inspection lanes. Never a wait here. Someone does the mandatory "safety check" (light check front and rear) and signs off on the records printout.
Go park, go inside to the main building and find the window that is giving out the numbered tickets. State your business and if you are over 60 years old or not. Take the ticket and sit down and wait for your number/window at the cashier to be called/displayed on the screen.
When your number is called, run over to the cashier's window. Since I am over 60 years old, I am called to a special window for retirees. I waited almost an hour.
At the cashier, i displayed my driver's license, registration card, and my over 60 discount document and copies thereof. Rather than pay the $580.00 pesos ($29.00 USD) I paid $339.00 pesos ($16.95) because us old folks receive a 40% discount on DMV fees! I was given a receipt to prove my fees had been paid.
Then I went back to the ticket window for another number for the "pickup document" area. I sat down in a second area and waited about ten minutes for this second number to be called.
I displayed the paid receipt from the cashier and my other documents/copies a second time. The clerk asked for my phone number and then had me print and sign my name on a document. He walked into an adjoining area and then returned shortly with my new 2017 registration documents.
I was given a sheet with four plastic-like documents with holograms and common serial numbers which included:
a) two 2017 license plate validation stickers, one for front license plate and another for rear plate and marked as such
b) one 2017 vehicle inspection sticker for the inside passenger side of windshield (This sticker self-destructs if you try to remove it)
c) one 2017 vehicle registration card about the size of a credit card (not paper but plastic with hologram)
Note: When you first receive your license plates, you are given a decal that looks like your license plate with your license plate number on it and this is placed on the inside of the rear window and can be seen by anyone standing/driving behind. If someone steals your plates and puts them on another car, obviously they won't have the corresponding image of your license plate that shows through the rear window.
End of story until next year.
