Did anybody see American Musclecar the other night when they dyno`d the factory versions of Detroits big blocks. They took all the heavy hitters from the 60`s , Chevys 409, Pontiacs 421, Fords 427, Chevys 427, and of course Chryslers 426 Hemi. All of the engines were built to stock specs, no head porting, no boring over .060, and stock cam specs, carburetion and ignition. Take a guess who the big winner was,.........yup Mopar. The Hemi made 820 HP followed by the 427 Ford at 630. All of the engines were impressive and it showed just how much automakers fudged the hp #`s for insurance purposes. Wasn`t the street hemi rated at 425 hp? If you can catch the episode , check it out, it`s good entertainment for 30 minutes.

I saw that. They werent as stock as they said they were though. They all had headers and the Hemi had Holleys on it. A stock street Hemi intake doesnt have the rooms for Holley carbs so it was the new aftermarket intake. I also can believe a street hemi cam can make 800 horse power.

820 HP WOW! wait so your telling me the stock rated hemis that were rated at 426 were actualy 800 or so. I heard the street hemi's rated at 425 were actually a little bit over 500. but still anyways that is amazing, even though adam points out the hemi was modified

The motors all had to have stock cam shafts in them, with no bigger than .060 over bore, and stock crank shafts. Dam it put a smile on my face when the Hemi pulled 820 hp!

I didn't see the program but as far as engines being underated for the most part they weren't. Looking at the trap speeds the muscle car era cars produced the rated power was not that far out of line.

That being said 820 HP from a "stock" hemi motor is pie in the sky. The fully prepared Super Stock hemi's from that era were only in that range.

They must have had a very optomistic dyno to get those numbers.

I was thinking the same thing as dgc333 regarding trap speeds. If you have an 800 hp car you should be running faster than high 12's, low 13's and I don't recall seeing anything quicker than that in the shootouts I've seen.

800 HP !!!! wow !!! That must mean that the 440-6pak in my 70 charger must be
pushing 1000 HP , cause it's running ported heads, big valves and a full roller cam
setup. And I must have more than 3 speeds in my 727 cause I can only hit 113 mph
with 3.54's. I will have to remember to shift again next time . I should be doing 150 !!

sorry, I don't mean to mock anybody except those T.V. shows.

820 HP and 689 Ft/Lbs, just slightly over the factory 425HP. HA HA. They mention at the end of the show that they were going to do another dyno show with some other motors. If they do a small block show, they should run the 340 six pak. You know those high winders were under rated too.

820 for a stock Hemi with Holleys and Headers, not a chance in hell. I'd believe 550, their dyno must be either be on drugs of there was a nasty little bugger behind the shield with a bottle of juice and smile on his face. And that ford at 630 is crap to. I watched the show last night and when they announced the results I spit up my supper and shut the TV off. Hopefully the maid in the hotel I'm at will clean up the mess today. :evil2:

The dyno numbers might be wrong, but the fact remains that the Hemi had the most horsepower!

Maybe they were F.A.S.T. cars. Weren't the S/S Hemi's around 650 hp from the factory?

Be as pessimistic as you like guys, the fact remains, HEMI'S RULE. The numbers might not be too far off. What rpm did they run up too? Fuel? Air quality? Numbers jump quick with blueprinting, good tuning, and certainly on a hemi, a set off headers. It was a good show John, at least we believe buddy.

I don't know much about it but horse pwer then and now are rated differently so that might have a little to do with the difference,

Don't get me wrong John, I'd never bet against a street Hemi when it comes down to the horsepower and raw torque these bad boys can put out. It doesn't surprise me in the least that it kicked the crap out of the competition, my only concern is the final numbers posted.

Who knows ,maybe it was a Mopar guy that ran the dyno or produced that particular show. Street Hemi ,I was thinking around 550 hp , but I`ve heard people say that a lot of hp can be made (with the Hemis) with very little, if you know your sh*t. I was just reitterating what the show put up for hp #`s, but I am pleased that the Hemi scored on the top.

Basically stock hemi putting out 820 h.p.....ya right!!!!...what a joke that was......

All I know is when they made that dyno pull on that HEMI, It was the loudest of all that was dynoed! It sounded like it was making power. I thought it was funny that the pontiac fell about 100 HP short of their prediction. I was taken back by the HEMI's numbers also. But with modern day tech, anything is possible. I'm always amazed when I see my freinds 1973 340 DUSTER NHRA stocker lifts the front wheels a foot & lays down a 11:44 ET. All this with a stock intake, Thermo-quad, small valve heads, low comp. The 427 ford also made some big numbers. But the HEMI rules!
