If so what is a good standard receptical unit?

garage is 24x30, 9 foot ceiling with open rafters.

I'm thinking probably need a 10,000 btu unit.

24x30 I am thinking that area will need at least a 16.000 btu with open rafters spaz.
I used plastic and stapled it to the open rafters to help keep me cool and warm in the winter. But let's get more o pinions 8)

220AC unit for sure.....better on power consumption. at a minimum 10k btu. also depends on the area that the air will flow. If its in a corner...flowing towards a wall...it will work twice as hard...taking longer to cool

mount it as high as you can also because cold air sinks and it will disperse more on the way down

I looked into this pretty hard for my garage. The largest window ac that you can just plug into 120 volt outlet is 16000 BTU. I would not recommend anything smaller. If I were you I would go with the 24000 btu window ac from Home depot. It rates well, best price, but you will have to install a 220 volt line/outlet. I wouldn't steer you wrong on this brother. I was going to go with the 24000 BTU window ac before settling on a portable AC. I found a NetworkAir PA4000 Portable at a great price I couldn't pass up. This is a commercial unit and works well. It's a plug and play model. Hope this helps. Below is my Portable PA4000 by APC. Christopher

Where do those large tubes go at the top?

Are they intakes or are they connected to ductwork or something?

How much does one of those suckers cost?

Spaz when I build my shop (coming soon) I will go with a unit like you see in hotel rooms. It heats and cools, sits low to the floor, and runs off 120v instead of 220 (I think). We installed one for a tennis club one time and it heated and cooled very well. I will also insulate the walls and ceilings then sheet rock the both wall and ceilings. I'm going to have to do some checking on prices but they sure do run quite compared to the other types. I dislike the window units..... thieves can pull the ac and come through the window.

I use a 27,500 btu 220 volt unit in my new garage. It's a window
unit, but it's mounted in the wall. Does a good job.

Walls are R19 and the ceiling is R30...helps a bunch.

I installed a Haier 12,000 BTU portable air conditioner (which plugs into a regular 120V outlet) and it cools my garage to a temperature below 70 degrees during Florida's hot and humid summer months.

My portable APC cost on average about 4000.00 bucks. But I found a guy locally on craigs list selling it. This guy did a job and was given this APC portable as payment. He didn't want it and I got it for 150.00 bucks:love7: Yes it was the deal of the century. That's why I bought it. It is only 14000 btu but does an OK job in my 20x25x13ft ceiling garage. You can see I vented it through an exhisting window so I didn't have to cut anything. Removal would be a snap. I would recommend no less that 16000 btu but I strongly recommend 24000 btu. You may also consider a split system, take a look at this site. http://www.invincible-electronics.com/Mini_Split_Heat_Pumps/cat315965_235112.aspx

If I get rid of my portable I think I will go with the 24000 btu split system.

splits are the way to go...but you are asking for a window right? bigger=better...220 is a must. To big, is bad though.... wasting power...insulation is a MUST! This keep the unit from working too hard and your wallet from being empty.

as an example. I have five window units. this past month three of the five run at night. one all night...120VAC units. My power bill this month.....350.....120VAC units draw a LOT!

Not sure the size but when my used unit went out last year i went to wally world, on Sunday, and got the biggest window unit they had. 220. If i turn it on in the morning it starts in at 68 deg. and holds it pretty good all day even in the heat. 2x4 walls are insulated with sheetrock. Foam board on the cieling. Cathedral cieling at 13 foot peak inside. Couldn't work n there if i didn't have any air. Plain and simple. All my aquaintences like it too. Notice i didn't say friends. I also use window fans setting around the floor to keep the air moving. Really works good. In the winter i use the Hardy wood burner outside to heat the house and shop. I also have cieling fans in the top to push the warm air down in the winter. I leave those fans off in the summer as i want the hot air to stay up high. Just common sense. As i do my shop expansion of the 40'x60' i will go to a geo thermal unit that i got off of a job that works fine. My existing cave is a 30'x40', 2 bay with an added down draft paint booth which is a 16'x30'. Insulation is your friend. Heat up, cool down. Good luck

I think I'm gonna hold off on the a/c unit this summer and spend the money on isulating the walls/ceiling and covering it all with sheetrock-my favorite thing next to getting a root canal done.
If I'm gonna do it, I might as well do it right.

My neighbors (hispanic guys) can lay sheetrock like nobody's business, maybe I can pay them to help me and be done in one day.
I've seen these guys work and man are they amazing to watch.
I bet they would do it for free though since I am always there for them when they need help.

3 guys sheet rocked by garage in 3 hours! 32X24 with 10 foot stud walls. The one guy was a moose! He picked up 12 foot 5/8 drywall like it was cool. It was money well spent in my opinion.

Here's where you find out what kind of neighbors you have.
