In 1968 Barracuda, was the 340 engine only available in the Formula S model and not in the standard model?

According to the Govier Book,
The 340 was an option code on all 68 Barracudas
He lists 340s in non"S" cars,
and S cars on a separate line
Do IDK
IIRC the Option code for a 340S was 367

So what it looks like to me from that little bit of info, that one would just tic off the 367 code, and the factory put that pkg on a non-318 car.
However it looks like the performance suspension parts of that pkg, code 368, could be ordered on any car, regardless of the engine.
But I wasn't there in 68 so IDK.

Some sources say yes, some say no.

Does anybody know for sure?

Back in '68 you could Special order almost anything.

No

And you could not order a super bird wing on a Imperial from the factory either.

All 340’s for North America use were Formula S in 1968

In 1969 you could get a 340 in these 3 models:
Barracuda
Formula S
‘Cuda

This is all spelled out in the factory literature here:

That's why I specifically wrote, " almost anything". There's no way the factory or the dealer would attempt to install something where it won't even fit/function!! We were talking engines..........

And the engines were available to be ordered in designated models.

Do you know of any 68 Valiant’s ordered and sold in US or Canada with 340 and the 340 engine code on the vin and etc?

They are very rare.:rofl:And most were not documented.

My Cadillac master mechanic friend ran into a factory installed 4sp in a 70's Coupe DeVille. Don't know how but he said it looked right at home in there. He ran the Vin and it came out as a 4sp car! How about the documented 65 "S" Valiant that's on slantsix? Plymouth Vip special order. Hey bro, paint it pink! Sure, Paint code 999

Do you have a fender tag or build sheet that shows otherwise?

No, I am looking to buy a 68 Barracuda and the VIN shows 340 engine. I don't have the fender tag info yet and wanted to verify it is a Formula S just by having the 340.

Apparently In 69 you could get a non-s 340 car with the “S” style suspension and such, more than a few have been posted here. Some even had 340-S emblems on the fenders with standard Argent grilles and tails. I would be reluctant to never say never. 68 May have been different and do not remember seeing a 340 car that did not have the usual formula S attire for that year with the hood treatment and fender badges. The 69 models I have seen posted seem to have pretty solid documentation! All of which goes against the old sales literature that is available.

What are the first two digits of the VIN ?

How does it go against sales documentation ??

People make that assumption and make up stories, but have not read the literature nor have vins and fender tags to back up thier claims. Then they pass on the wives tales.

That is what I mostly use for reference and the literature usually leans to what I am saying. The pocket sales guides tell you that you can order ... with... obviously special orders could be had. This is a great resource but not not all encompassing.

Thanks some more to Brad for making this available to us.

1967 it was possible to get a 273 HP in a non S car, and all the other form S package options could be added separately, but that car would not get form S badging.

thanks to all for your help

And then there was me and one other guy that had something totally diff., that no one believes. Wish I HAD PICS OF THE BUILD SHEET , BUT I DON`T !
Bought new , from of Tink Wilkersons Chrysler / Plymouth, 1968.
68 FORM s 383 (ROADRUNNER ENGINE) FASTBACK . BUILD SHEET STATED THAT IT HAD THE ROADRUNNER ENGINE , 330 HORSE, DOWN GRADED BECAUSE OF DRIVERS SIDE EXHAUST MANIFOLD.
Believe it or not, I don`t care !!

I believe it because I know that you could get "special order" vehicles that weren't normally sold to the public. They are out there, go find them....

That's the one I most wish I`d kept. But, I never was too smart ! It was much like a 66 327/265 horse chevy 2 that a buddy had, almost uncontrollable w/ the puny tires of that day. Both cars were "had to drive it or get out of it!" Mostly the later!
