What is the diameter of the transmission hole in a big block A
Body bell housing
I have an A body transmission with a
4.80 diameter front bearing retainer
Need a bell housing

It depends. One was 4.80 and one was 4.35.

Looking for a 4.80
That would make sense. Post a wanted thread in the classifieds. That'll be following the rules and it will get more views. You should also include the body style you need it to fit as they are all not the same and we cannot read minds. Good luck!

Lakewood makes a nice aluminum bell. It fits the big 308 bearing front retainer and also has spacers included for other sizes.

I dont think there were any OEM big block bells in aluminum. Someone correct me if im wrong on this. If you want factory iron, search for PN 2892626. Im sure there are other compatible factory bells.

there was a factory 10.5” big block aluminum bell for 70-01 B/E bodies and it has the 4.80 retainer opening and will work in an A body. #2892513

Sure they made them in aluminum.
'70 and up big blocks had them, but they were for the 10 1/2'' clutches with 130 tooth flywheel and had a 4.807'' opening for the bearing retainer.
2892513 is the number for them.

Have you or anyone you know used the Lakewood aluminum bell housing you listed?
I was wondering about fitment etc. as I'm sure the O.P. and others would be interested in this info.
That's a good price for them as well...

I would like the weight savings but I'm not sure I'd feel safe with an aluminum bell at speed.

I have one of the lakewood aluminum bell housings but I havent used it yet.
As far as safety, I would rather have a new aluminum that an oem bell. But if its safety your concerned with, your only choice should be a explosion proof bell but those are running close to 1K now.
On the lakewood, they also sell it as a kit that includes the fork, boot, lower cover and hardware. It works with 10.5 or 11" flywheel. Also available in small block/gen3

I've got a big Lakewood steel bell in my Roadrunner that I bought new in like 91. A Browell slant back bell in my race car. Are the new aluminum bells SFI? and they actually have one for the big flywheel?

The new lakewood aluminum bell can accept 10.5 or 11" flywheel. It is also drilled for multiple type transmissions and includes adapter rings for the bearing support hole depending on what trans you bolt up to it.
I dont think it is SFI rated.

This Lakewood cast aluminum bellhousing connects Big Block Mopar engines to Mopar 3 spd, Mopar 4 spd or Ford style TKX/TKO transmission. Designed as a compact, lightweight option for transmission swaps or upgrade. It can use either a 130 or 143 tooth flywheel and a 10.5 or 11 inch clutch. It is suited for factory style mechanical or hydraulic clutch actuation, and has dual starter positions to provide ultimate combination options and fitment.
Features:
  • Direct fit for Big Block Mopar engines using a Mopar 3 spd, Mopar 4 spd or Ford style TKX/TKO Transmission
  • Lightweight Cast Aluminum Design Similar To Original Equipment Bellhousings
  • Lower Cost Option For Projects That Do Not Require A Steel SFI Rated Unit
  • Includes transmission alignment rings for correct fitment of all applicable transmissions
  • Fits 130 or 143 tooth flywheels and 10.5 or 11-inch clutches to provide multiple combination options
  • Features dual starter positions and works with factory style mechanical or hydraulic clutch linkage"

Thank you

The bell does seem a little thicker in the starter area, probably extra meat to accommodate multiple size flywheels. I think I read that Z bar modification may be required. Just something to think about if your considering the lakewood.

I had an OEM bell in a 70 roadrunner in about 78. We were driving down the road when all at once the shifter rotated around and like to beat the hell out of me. The bellhousing had split radially all the way around it.

I bought a gTx at one point with an aluminum bell in it and noticed it was cracking. I paid a guy to TIG the crack, and when it came back it was so warped that it didn't fit the back of the block any more. It should have been bolted to a block, and maybe a transmission, before welding. It's now wall art.

In both cases the crack started where the dust cover mounts up.

If you use one of those OEM bells, look at it carefully and inspect it often.
