Just curious.. if front opening is better why do nascar guys use the low pressure cowl area at 200mph?

something like this

Nascar also has rules that they need to follow. Cowl induction is a great place to pick up air, but also have to consider sealing the carb to the opening, also slowing the air down once inside the scoop. Slowing the air down increases pressure. A properly shaped scoop (not just the opening) will get you 1-2Psi of pressure. ...boost. There is a lot of science behind all of this and I know very little.

Front facing scoops work when you move them up, high, like really high, above the boundary layer. Rear facing scoops draw on low pressure areas which is good but will never see positive pressure.

I think it was Gale banks that showed (on an NA land speed truck) 2 psi of boost at 180mph or so. They even intercooled it.

I know there are formulas to determine the inlet size for the engine size and speed. Too large and it will spill out the opening and cause very turbulent air. I believe it should be about 3" for mine. For now. If i can get this headache to clear up, I will go out and play with the cardboard some more.

So I played with some cardboard again. I believe even this is better. 80s ProStoc esque. And got my pulleys lined up. I needed to move the power steering pump to the passengers side. No matter what I did, the belt hit the lower hose and bottom of the water pump. Should work now, just need different belts. My adapter for the steering rack came as well. Now I can just use -6 lines from my Sweet Mfg pump to rack and rack to resivior.

I was wondering why the scoop needed to be so high, then I noticed the huge spacer under the carb. Why so thick?

Because I had it and due to the upper rpm for the extended time. You can't have enough plenum volume. Honestly I think a rat roaster or single carb STR would be good. It would be good if tall enough to fit multiple intake set ups.

Would a single plane not be better for sustained high rpm ?

Likely yes, but the RPM intake with a 2" taper 4 hole to open spacer should work well. I do have a Torker 383 and an Offy tunnel ram. With the cam and heads, this set up is likely the best as it isnt much motor for now. If I can get some good heads and a 270 @50 ish cam, then the tunnel ram or a super victor will be better.

Offy makes a short individual runner top for the tunnel ram. Has my curiosity. Maybe some 660s as they are 1:1. With no real plenum, maybe better for drag racing, but the short runners seem ideal also.

Well, finished at the doctor's appt. The surgeon found no definitive reason to do surgery right now. He wants a few more tests done to help pinpoint where the issue is stemming from. As I expected really. Next is an MRA and Bone Scan with dye. My symptoms are to erratic to give him the confidence at the present to commit. We will see.

Small plenum makes carbs act smaller, you want more plenum volume to feed high rpm.
But that's a tuning thing. I was running the same tunnel ram, a little modified but It liked 2 inch super suckers spacers. Lost power, with no spacers, lost power with open spacers, lost power with 4 hole lol.
It like the extra plenum volume.

That's great news, hopefully you can figure out a non addictive way to deal with pain.
I myself have back issues too and I hate it, just never know when I'm going to wake up screwed for a couple days.

This has been building for 5 or more years. The last year being the worst of it. When it flares up, I get chest wall pain. So, 24/7 it makes you worry about heart issues. Last time that lasted over a week. Been to ER over it 3 times. It is time., but the symptoms are A-typical so it has the doctors confused. The fatigue that comes with it sucks. Work and hobbies are suffering because of it.

Yep, sorry man.

back in 62 tommy grove made a bonnie run with melrose missile 2 , 165 one way . but broke a rim . it's an early American racing equip rim . i've got the set of rims and the tires he ran there in 62 .

Might be better with something like this just for the aero

Being more rounded will help, but where it dips back down before the windshield is what we are trying to eliminate. I will see what we can come up with. It will be a constant upgrade of parts to find more speed. I mostly just need a working car, then see when I can get out there. I own the rectangle one now

I did learn today that I should reroute the exhaust. Having it run out the side of the fender will be like hanging a 3 -4 foot 4x4 out off the side of the car at WOT and up to speed. I hadn't thought too much about it as there are many other cars running similar exhaust. This was a tip from a blue hat racer, so I will see what I can do. Blue Hat = 300+mph record holder.

old NASCAR had side exhaust and the temps were a lot higher(?) if run out the back. maybe to discourage drafting?
I think Nascar teams tried the out the back and it was banned. Drafting and fume problems. I would assume some teams found a way to use the pipe itself to direct air under the car.

I do know some fast cars are using the exhaust to "clean" the air around tires and Other obstacles. Lesser of the evils. Air around the tires is very dirty and highly turbulent.
