I was hoping to buy a breakdown Engine hoist, something that I could put in the bed of my truck and use by myself as needed.
These don't appear to common... All is see are foldable ones.

Is there a reason for not being able to buy a breakdown type? Is there a better way?

I need to load a 340 block from an engine stand and strong reliable people that are readily available are no longer an option. Chainfall and come along not options either.

I'm unclear on the difference between "breakdown" and "foldable". Can you expound? I have an OLD school engine hoist that doesn't fold, for example. "I could" disassemble it, but it's not made to be stored in a "space saving" manner by any stretch of the imagination. lol It will fit into the bed of my truck, though.

Looking for something that I can easily load into my truck by myself. It appears that a foldable one may not breakdown enough? I have seen very old USA made ones so I know that they exist.

Just shove a normal sized one in. They normally fit. Mine has the legs that slide on in and it fits fine in the Dakota.

Well I'm not 25 anymore and trucks are a lot higher these days. I have done that with my 30 year old crane and an 2WD S10 pickup many times long ago. And before anyone asks, the crane that I have is not where I need it.

I've taken my Pittsburgh hoist apart a couple times and put it in the back of my Ridgeline (inside the topper). It's not light, and it's not billed as "breakdown", but it does come apart if needed, and it does fold-up for storage.

Well that just clears it right on up. I was gonna help you look, but I still don't know what to look for so......

This is mine. It's clearly not "foldable" nor would I call it a breakdown. I could certainly disassemble it, I suppose, but then I'd have to put it back together when I need it and that's too much like work. lol

Thank you. I'm eyeing those. Looks like the folding legs have removable pins and can be separated? Seeking options before going to Harbor freight.

My 2017 Ram 1500, I used a "normal" hoist (non foldable). To both remove and set in engines in box with hoist on ground and tailgate down. Just FYI, and it's similar to Harbor freight style.

Been a while since I've used it (I'm working on the actual shop building right now), but I did move it the other day, and I think the legs are held-in/hinged by removable pins, yes.

I'm at work right now and can't check, and of course the picture I took over the weekend doesn't show it, as the new furnace is in the way...

Dam sure cant go to sears anymore...........Montgomery Ward........... Sucks
I hope you find what you are looking for Ron as those engine lifts can be very bulky I get it. Texas Red

Yeah, pretty sure Sears sold them long ago. I know a guy that has one, but I hate borrowing stuff and I don't want the drama that typically goes with it.

I haven't seen a break down rental type since the 70's. You might check rental places. Was a good option to run up to the rental place and throw it in the trunk piece by piece. I now have the horror freight foldable style.

We are forced to go to hobo frieght just like we are forced to go to wally world after they took out all the mom & Pops store that used to be ...........
Let me make this clear ......... I AM NOT A FAN OF EITHER PLACES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Gary

Neither am I, but sometimes "It's all we got".

This is probably what you are thinking of, I got this about 1990 from a place like Harbor Freight, (might have been Harbor Freight).
As it it is when I transport it I pull the boom and mast but leave the rest together.
I lift the long legs into the truck, then lift the other end in.

I think the one that I am thinking of is made by Bluebird and consist of 5 parts

^^THAT is not very strong looking^^ Can you do any welding / fab? I would think "the best" of the HF type, and that type is copied and sold elsewhere, you could easily make it more "take apart" with some work

What little I've hauled mine, I pull the cylinder, the arm, and the leg extensions and toss those in the bed, then I take what's left and wrestle it up on a little flatbed I made out of a free former tent trailer.

Could you maybe get/ build a ramp and small winch if necessary, and just drag the base part up the ramp into the bed?

I am 77 and certainly understand, these days, about losing your "manhood." I have lost a LOT since converting the Ram/ Cummins to 4WD!!!!

Me, middle of that project, Sept 022

On a related note, my Harbor Freight roll-around hoist and my Harbor Freight engine stand don't play well together. The legs of one of them are always in the way of the legs of the other. Makes no sense.

Mine was plenty strong. It was bolted to the floor of my step van. It was reinforced with angle iron underneath. It may have been bolted through the frame, too. It's been a while.
