I was watching this rabbit and then a hawk shrieked from above.....

It turns out that a 1970 D300 is great air raid protection.

Glad he was protected. Walked out the other morning to this. No sign of struggle. Glad I found him and not the wife or grandkids.

That looks like fox or neighbors dog. Hawks would had grabbed and go. Just a pile of fur on the ground.

God rest his soul - hopefully it did not suffer. It’s one thing to kill and eat but to kill and run is a waste.
Sucks to be at the bottom of the food chain.

Definitely not a dog. Absolutely no signs of struggle, it was instant. No flattened grass or fur. Not to be gross, but the only "part " that were missing was half its head and one eye. The part of its head laying on the grass was intact. Apparently the brains and eyes are a delicacy for some birds(owls, hawks) and that's all that was taken.
There is a Coopers Hawk the neighbours spotted on our property as well as baby owls. Foxes are becoming more predominant too around here.
Thankfully it was instant, or I would think there would have been more signs of a struggle.

City, suburbs or rural, it doesn't matter to Mother Nature.
I live in north Orange County (SoCal). For the past few years we've had a pair of doves nest each Spring in a hanging basket under the eaves right by the walkway to our front door. They'd stay as still and quiet as statues anytime someone walked by.
They returned again this year and were busy constructing their nest. A couple of months ago I came home from work to find a pile of feathers in the driveway. Just feathers, no bones.
I assume it was a hawk that got one of them. Haven't seen the other one since.
We've had a couple of new 'couple' prospects land and take a look, but no new 'tenants' so far.

I have a pretty healthy population of red tailed hawks and a few eagles around my house and woods. It's common to find piles of feathers under some of their perches. I watched a small harrier type hawk grab a mourning dove out of the yard a couple winters ago!

The most interesting one was when I found a wing off a pretty large bird out back. I spooked a great horned owl out of tree pretty close to where I found the wing. It flew away with something in his talons that was pretty large. Wasn't sure what it was, so I grabbed a few feathers off the wing and did an internet search. Ended up being a red tailed hawk, so something larger definitely got a hold of it! Probably the owl! The circle of life!

Arond here we get a few bald eagles, more and more as the years go on. Zero rabbits. The fox does pretty well with the mice and squirrels. Now a cat moved in the neighbourhood, no owners as far as the neighbours know, and its steady hunting.
So the wildlife is taking care of the varmints pretty well.
Couple years ago there was a perigrine falcon, screeching and hammering the pigeons that were trying to nest in my barns. Lots of feather piles that year. Something has chased the crows off, as they havent been around for a couple weeks.or they are being quiet.

Everything has to eat. Some living things eat vegetation, some eat meat, and some eat both. God created hunters and the hunted. Yet, the hunted are always plentiful and the hunters are not seen as much.....

We had a cat who was "famous" for leaving rabbit carcasses sans heads.... Circle of life I guess.,
