Late January I cut the back of my hand and several tendons with a cutoff wheel. Recovery is going well, but can't work on the car and can't race for 2-3 more weeks. I'm going nuts not being able to go to the track, which has been open for 3 weeks now in my part of the country. I can't decide which is the most painful part: Can't drive the race car or paying the medical bills!

I have the solution. Move somewhere "where we have winter" and then you can't race, anyway LMAO

Not very long ago. Looking like the white whale will have to go BACK on the hoist

This was taken a few years ago, but earlier this year, it looked just like this

Looking at a possible move to the Phoenix area in a couple of years.
What kind of drag racing is available and how far of a drive is it to the Vegas track??

yeow - thanks for NOT posting a pic.. those bad boys jump hard when they catch don't they!? I don't care how long you've been doing this or how careful you think you're being, the potential for a pretty brutal injury is one friggin' blink away.. hope you come out if it with no lasting ill effects.

There is one remaining track in the SE corner of the Phoenix metro area.... Wild Horse Pass. Speedworld, which was in the NW corner was a very nice track, but closed several years ago. The next close track would be Tucson which is approx. 2.5 hour away, and then Vegas which is a good 6hr pull. Barona then Fontana in CA would be the next in the 6-7hr category.

While it's nice to have the opportunity to race pretty much year around, from April until September it can be quite brutal going the the track. There's no shade to speak of and sitting in a sea of asphalt during those months can be a bit challenging to say the least.

That'll teach ya not to operate a grinder without the guard. Heal fast!

X2!!!!! I keep telling myself to spend a few $$$$ for a metal nibbler! NO hf s***!!! the last cutoff wheel I used few weeks back without the guard, exploded and hit me right in the n***! no it was NOT funny, and then there is the scar the other one put on my cornea!!!! and I had safety glasses on! ha
cut off wheels are crap unless you buy the high $$ ones from the specialty co.

I'll bet it's fun trying to cool the car down between passes too.
I am semi retired, wife will have opportunity to retire or relocate to Phoenix in 2-3 years.
We both love being at the track, so this will enter into our decision.

Grinders and cutters can definitely be dangerous, and I hate guards as they always seem to be right in the damn way of what I want to do.

I have never been hurt much by either one besides taking all the skin off a knuckle down to bone with a bench grinder, or a nice groove in a finger from a cutting wheel.

My Brother had a 7" inch grinder catch the bottom of his T shirt and wind it all the way up and split his lip in half and take a good size section out of the corner of his nose.

Another guy we know put a 12 inch cut off wheel on a 4 inch grinder without paying any attention to RPM limitations and went to the hospital looking like he was prepared for intestinal surgery.
They found a 3 inch piece of the blade inside him and he spent a week in the hospital.

115 or hotter normally, so figure no shade and a sea of asphalt on top of that. :D
Burning your hands on a steering wheel is pretty common, as is going out and finding the temp gauge already on the move and the car hasn't even run yet.

Vegas is the same way.

looks like to me Az and Vegas are " winter" places to race at!!???? ha

it gets plenty hot in Tx I know, but just have to wonder if Tx isn't a better place to be than lots of places> no place is perfect I figure. maybe Ca looks good till it falls off into the ocean!? ha ( sorry just joking!?????).....

Well my little pud track has grass parking and shade trees near a river and that comes in handy in the summer and fall when you're trying like hell to keep your engine temp down and your tire pressure from going up. I did a local track last Aug it was 100 degrees and no shade, asphalt pit, etc. Had the car in the shade, front tires at 38 lbs. Sat in the lanes for 5 minutes, 1 run down the track and the fronts were at 43 lbs! That's crazy!!
