Cut open an LP Tank?

While cleaning up my backyard, I came across 3 old grill sized LP tanks. Among other things. I checked with the local scrap yard, and they'll take them as long as they are cut in half. Anybody ever done that? I've opened the valves, and nothing seems to come out, but I'm not sure I trust that - these things are rusty as an A body in Michigan. And they were partially buried in the back yard. I have plenty of ways to cut them, plasma, wheel of death, Sawzall.... but I picture sparks not ending well.

I'm thinking of drilling a hole to vent anything that might still be in there.

Ideas?

I'd take a lighter or match and try to light it at the valve. If it doesn't light, I'd get a cut off wheel to it so quick it'd make your head spin. You only live once. lol

I'm not sure my head would spin so much as fly backward in little pieces - if there's still gas in the tank!

So far the valve hasn't shown any desire to be unscrewed. It's soaking in penetrating oil right now. I'm thinking applying heat to it isn't particularly wise either.

Just be sure all the old heavier-than-air propane is out.

Us fun boys in Ohio use them as targets! If you poke enough holes in them they don't hold nuten no more.

Tracer rounds work really well for poking holes in them.

Just sit them out by the road/ street and someone else will handle the removal for you.

Everything I ever put out by the road was gone within 24 hrs.

1/8" drill bit to the side in an oil bath! once you have determined no pressure enlarge the hole and fill with water
