What is the deal with it?? Our 2 Coonhounds think they are getting some kind of treat or something. Every time I get ice out of the ice maker and they are around I give them each a couple of ice cubes. They stand there and chew on them like they are crack or something. Ever since we had our Queenslands teeth cleaned she does not like them, guessing her teeth are just sensitive. Earlier today I was getting some ice & water and Red, the guy in the shirt in avitar came running from the back yard to get some ice. He was at least 100' from the fridge.....

Had a dog (got her at the pound). She was just like that. She liked ice cubes better then treats. I just assumed that the former owner used ice cubes as treats when she was a puppy

My old Rottie loved ice cubes, I think its a texture/cold thing in thier mouth.
She also loved to watch ceiling fans. Dogs are wierd but awesome.

Same here, we have two dogs that absolutely love to eat ice cubes, and will destroy a bag of carrots with no problem.

We give the hounds carrots mixed in with there food for breakfast. The Queensland gets Sugar Snap Peas. Ever since a member here gave me a recipe for treats they vary rarely get store bought treats.

Our corgi loves ice cubes as well. And, yes, it's like they're cracking out when they're getting them. It was real interesting when we were getting quarter sized hail about a month or so ago. lol

Every dog we've had loved em. I think they get bored with dog food.

Our lab loves ice cubes, what is that recipe for dog treats?

This might give you a kind of Idea why.

So I guess the cubes help to keep them cool. Plus I think they just like the crunch sound.

I also have read that if a dog gets over heated you should rub ice cubes on the bottom of their feet. Because they can't sweat and evaporate it to keep them cool with all that fur.

My last dog a lab pit mix would dig up the carrots from the garden and, she also liked ice cubes.

This would explain why the Queensland sticks her feet in any of the water buckets she can when she is running thru the yard and it is sunny out....Thanks....

My walker treeing hounds LOVE ice! Like you said they act like they are getting the best treat ever... lol

They like to get thier paws wet in the watter bowl too..

I love those bitches. lol.

:D

Doug, get a large cooler put some ice in it and leave the lid off. Just lay a blanket or burlap on as a cover. Put it outside and watch the dogs.

Just like the rest of you my dog loved ice. Go to frig and get a glass of ice, he was right there.

But a friend of mine who has 3 large dogs was told by the vet, DON'T GIVE YOUR DOGS ICE CUBES

It is just like the dentist telling us not to chew ice. It is hard on there teeth, can crack them.

So hope you never have to get a tooth pulled because chomping on ice and they fracture a tooth

Why do they like ice cubes?
Remember, dogs don't sweat. They dissipate heat through their mouths and tongues.

...and most of them are wearing fur coats all summer long.

Whether it's good for them or not, I really can't say, but the post above about cracking a tooth makes a lot of sense.

How do they like the homemade treats? My 2 girls love their veggies. I even give them frozen Broccoli for treats and mix veggies in with their dried food.

I started mine on ice cubes when they were little. They loved em when they were teething. Now every time the freezer opens they are right there wanting their ice.

They actually eat them instead of inhaling them like they do the store bought treats. We have a pair of African Greys as well. When she feeds the birds the dogs will often get some of the fruits & vegetables the birds get. Kind of funny watching them eating some of the stuff. You can tell they don't really like it, but they will eat it. Celery is one of them. And certain kinds of melons. The one hound hates French Beans, so when he starts acting like a knucklehead he will get some for a day or so.

Ice cube is my Huskies favorite treat in summer. She'll leave it lay and melt in winter.

Had a springer that loves to eat ice. A basset hound that does too. But if you put ice in that springer's water bowl it would lose its mind. It would bury it's head eyeball deep in the water and start barking and digging in it.
