My father was part of the WW2 generation, June 6, 1944 "D-Day" was the largest amphibious invasion in history.

Does anyone remember the sound that the World War 2 fighter the P51 Mustang would make in a power dive... If not, give a listen.

the, i think, it was called the yannkie air mueum south of detroit. i live north of detroit but there was a B-17 bomber there and would fly over once a month. that was until they had a fire have not seen it in a long time. now i just watch the A-10 Warthogs out of south ridge air base

T bolts. One of the truly alltime awesome aircraft

"Sack Happy" turns up quite often on Google. Evidently the model kits like to put those decals in their kits

WWII warbirds are great to see fly. The Planes of Fame museum at Chino Airport here in SoCal has an outstanding airshow each year where they fly a lot of the restored aircraft from the museum.
Don't miss it if you ever have a chance to visit.

Ive always been a big fan of old WWII planes. My personal favorite is the Lockheed P38 Lightning. Arent too many of those left now, don't think Ive ever actually seen one in person.

I see that they just recently finished restoring a P38J model and it actually flies too! Very neat.

No. Might have been someone he was stationed on Ie Shima with or their family member.
I do have some of the same pictures some I got off the net.

Thanks for posting those links though. I bookmarked them.
Here's a picture. Him and his plane.

Today was the second of three days I am part of the ground crew for one few flying B-17s. It comes to Denver each year about this time to give rides. If they don't sell all of the seats, they take one of with them for free. Those BIG piston engines make a sound all their own. Today we also had a P-51D on static display. It stole the show for the most part, even without flying.

Which one? I bought a ride in the "radio room" of one a while back. As an old guy, when I was a young radio amateur, there was tons of WWII surplus radio gear available, and I am, (or was LOL) familiar with most of it.

I had to explain to one woman that the plexiglass over the waist positions "wasn't there" in WWII, at 20K ft, and -40 with the wind blowing 200 mph.

I told her, "next winter, when its below zero, have your husband take you for a ride in the back of your pickup at about 70. Not even close."

Just heard on "thee news" that B-25 "Grumpy" is in Spokane at Felts Field 'til Sunday. I won't be goin' for a ride. I have better things to do with 500 bucks.

(just a photo I stole)

P-40s definately cool, but pretty much obsolete by the time WWII got going.

Even the original Allison Mustangs were dogs--until they stuck a Rolls in the thing.

Now WEIRD, is a Bell P-39 / P63 Air, King Cobra.

Great Big 37mm firing through the middle of the prop hub

While I like the P51 Mustang, I have always been preferable to the P38, especially the Night Flyer version.

One of my favorites -- used it as a screen saver for quite awhile, was B-29 named "Ernie Pyle.

For those that remember the TV show, nada

The REAL Ernie Pyle was as news / photographer in WWII, was killed in combat in the Pacific on an Island NW of Okinawa. He was in a jeep, an got hit with machine gun fire

For some reason I cannot find the hi-rez photo (this was a few years ago,) but this is the photo

Sad, the B-29 had such an inglorious retirement. Most were tossed off to scrap or gunnery targets. Currently there is only one in the world left flying, Fifi. There is another that keeps struggling for airworthy restoration, "Doc", but funds and storage are always short. Consider that the next time you can't find the window trim for your 'Cuda.
