Found a leaking Indy 360-1 head for my buddy

-
I've had not one but two sets of brand new SBF AFR's leak externally above the exhaust ports on the dyno. It was the weirdest thing to watch a water drop form right through the casting and drip. Porosity was microscopic but it was enough to leak.

Oh and relevant to this post yes Indy 360-1's are often porous--had a set on a SF-901 in 2004 ish that leaked in the spring pads and exhaust ports--still made 649HP though-then the heads went back to ShadyDell from whence they came. J.Rob

I’ve had similar types of external leaks on new heads a couple times.
Ede Pontiac RPM head and a Dart BBC Pro 1 cnc 355.
I know of a Dart big chief head that had a pin hole leaking externally as well.
That was on a very high dollar 632 build from one of the higher profile big name shops.
They just drilled a small hole, tapped it, and screwed a pipe plug into it.
Said they saw it pretty often.

I went to see it pressure tested today and it was blowing bubbles at the top of on weld and the bottom of the other. I dropped it off at the welder again and marked the area and he welded it again after I left. I could have picked it up today but my it would have been to late to have it pressure checked again. I will pick it up tomorrow after my doctor appointment. Bob dropped off an untouched 245 head he bought as a spare but the guides are tight, his other head is modified for different oiling, and the valve job needs cleaned up. And of course pressure checked. My shop is just to busy to do the work so hopefully this head passes pressure test this time. If not I’m going to get sucked into matching up this head and switching the gear over. Meanwhile my jobs sit.

I have never had a cnc’d 245 Indy 360-1 head in my hands till today. This spare head is marked W2 on the flat side (end). I guess he paid Ryan (shadydale) 1500.00 to do his thing then the other guy flowed it and it didn’t produce the flow numbers given so he ported them again. I’m very suspicious of the flow numbers he gave him. Looking at this head I don’t know how someone could charge over 200.00 for the work that may pay dividends. A few spots on the shortturn could use blended and a lip (Ridge) on the shortside

C’mon John...... plop that thing up on the bench.

Let’s see what it is ootb from Indy.

What’s going on there at the base of the guide boss?

We use a lot of castings at work still, we've been slowly moving away as the cost benefit vs CNC on a billet has dropped and the longer lead time has remained the same.

Anyway, we vacuum impregnate our castings for just this kind of issue, small voids and porosity. The process is done on a finish machined part, and aside from a slight change in color you can't tell.

This is the place we use, might be something to consider vs chasing a crack around with a Tig torch.

That’s an awesome link. It appears the cost is relatively low but it s hard to say how much it would be if you just sent in a pair of cylinder heads.

I’m thinking this should be done to my early W2’s before I pick up a grinder. Just to head off any leaks.

Thanks for the link.

I wonder what it costs to have a set of heads done.

I checked our pricing from our local vendor in W. Hartford, looks like it would be about $150 for a single set of heads. They're a mom and pop kind of place who does the few small castings we use.

They say they are doing blocks for 8 bucks but that’s probably for doing a ton of blocks at time.

Most of the stuff we send them is BIG, so I couldn't really extrapolate from what we pay to a set of heads.

Well guys I’m done with it. Two more trips to the welder and two trips to have it pressure tested and it still leaks. 4 more wasted hours after my 10am Doctors appointment. It’s up to Bob and my son now. F it.

It’s a black hole of time.....

Some ceramic seal might take care of what’s leaking now.

You gave it the ole college try.

Did you P-test the new head?

You went far and above the cause. Junk is junk at any price.

No sir. This shop was doing me a BIG favor just following through with this head. They charge 80.00 to pressure test a head and they charged me (Bob) 50.00 to do it three times. Bob doesn’t know it yet but he also donated 20.00 towards the shops pizza fund. Lol.
