I know this is a bonehead question but I'm trying to get the upper shock nut off and it seems like it's just spinning and making rubber squeaking noises. Is there some trick to this I'm not getting?

hold the top of the tread shaft with a pair of pliers or something?

There is actually a special socket that fits on the top.. If you're going to toss the shocks,, you may be able to grab onto the lower shaft with vise-grips..

hope it helps

Air tool will spin the nut off faster than the shock can turn most cases.
Without that or a special socket, small vise grip should serve the purpose.

or . . . using a deep socket and a long extension, rock the shock stud back and forth and break it .
