High zinc oil

-
I am using Royal Purple...

I dont know 1st hand, but was told by an engine guy that Royal Purple has a line of oil that has no zinc. The reason for that apparently was to be able to meet SAE standards....maybe dbl chk the bottle to be sure.

What about Shell Rotella T Diesel oil? My son in law likes running it. I have
been using Lucas oil aditive with the zinc in it. With my normal oil.

Yep, forgot bout that! Local mopar engine machinist recommended the Rotella(he races mopars) for dads 273 to go along with Lucas additive.

Thanks for all the good info guys!

Not going with a roller cam, motor is already built the way I wanted it.

I didn't know we could get Joe Gibbs up here so that's good to know, thanks cuda20. That's another good option.

What I've read about diesel and racing oil is:

The problem with using diesel oil is the higher amount of dispersants and detergents used because of the higher amounts of soot and ash with diesel fuel, and some of those detergents will cause excessive ash buildup in the combustion chamber.

Racing oils have just the opposite problem with not enough detergents, because it reduces the effectiveness of the oil in racing applications, so it has to be changed very often

X2 on the Schaeffer's, I've been running it in my 12 Valve cummins for years and plan on using it in my 360 when I put it together

shell rotella t 15-40 is 1200ppm zinc min and with a bottle of lucas its up around 2000 ppm . i use this in my 416 and i use strait 30 rotella t in detroit in my boat and its has 23000 hours and good for at least 10000 more hours so it must be good

..i called Shell Canada about a year ago and spoke with their tech dept.
..they said Rotella was still 1200 ppm.

1200 ppm to 1400 ppm of zinc and phosphorous (each) is about ideal. There are studies that indicate that much over 1600 ppm not only does no added good but can also create issues with ring sealing and such at higher levels. More is not always better. My advice to anyone - if you don't have a catalytic converter on your car - use high zinc oil or additive. Why take a chance.

I just had my 360 rebuilt and am running Shell Rotella T (Triple).
It's like $18 a gallon at autozone
but this week there is $4 off so it's $14 for the gallon jug.

I just got done talking to the Shell oil lead representative the other day. Keep in mind Shell now owns Penzoil and Quaker State lines. I was talking to him about what they recommend for the older hot rods that have a high zinc content. He recommend the new Quaker State Defy oil. It was made specifically with high zinc and other compounds to reduce the friction wear and such that is the problem. He had lots to say about it (naturally since he is the distributor) but he brought up many many valid points. Enough to make me drain my oil and go get some QS Defy and try it. Found it readily avail at most places too. I have always been a Valvoline fan.... but after hearing some of the things that Shell/penzz are doing and actually learning of the chemical compounds and additives they are using now.... im fairly impressed.

Can you believe the factory fill oil for all Ferraris is now Penz ?? That says quite a bit in itself.

I'm hearing that the oils for diesel either have or are going to lower the zinc levels to the level of their regular ones, 600 - 800 PPM.

The quaker state oils sounds interesting, not sure if we have up here yet but I'll check.

The Brad Penn oil sounds good

Mobil 1 full syn with a hyd roller cam/roller lifters/roller rockers and you'll have no more hunting just go to Walmart and buy the 5 qt jug for $26.

I didn't build a roller motor, I'm pretty sure those parts aren't even available for my motor. I didn't say what motor it was did I? :D

If you want high zinc dino oil try Eddy oil! like 5-6 dollars and made for our cams!

Im using comp cam for break in! Brian at IMM said it was repacked joe gibbs or brad penn or something

I use Z-alt. I have had no issues. Nobody else has tried it?

I have been using Z-alt. I have it in my 67 d-100 daily driver, Ive got about 25,000 miles on it now and have had no issuses at all. I also run it in my 273 in my dart When the rockers are adjusted to specs with the z-alt there is no noise. Other oils Ive tried you can allways hear them
