Holley 650 DP Question

Do you have those 318 heads still on there. Must have, that helps too. With 360 heads it could hit 6500 rpms with fresh valve springs.

With the 318 heads you can run a bigger cam, with 360 heads and those larger ports, its best to stay a little on the small size.

You could always try 360 heads later on, just make sure you get them milled to around 63cc chambers to keep your compression up. I have the newer 360 high swirl heads with a 2.02 intake valve. It was a big help everywhere but I am running 3.91 with a 2.74 1st gear auto trans.

They are stock 1.78/1.50 valved 318 heads, which helps with port velocity. I thought about trying a set of 302s, but have not found any to work on.

I think the addtion of 3.55s eventually will help, as this thing still only turns 2700 rpm at 65 mph, due to the large 235/70/15s on the rear, maybe they are 245s, I cant remember.This is 3.21 gearing too, so if I could turn it at 3,000 rpm with the 3.55s, Id be stoked.
 

Those are the size back tires I run. Sometimes I wished I went with 4.10 gears instead of 3.91' but guess its good for a few more miles per hour top end. It does run out of motor and not space on the freeways and its good for 6000 rpms easy.

I looked at the 302 heads, the ports seemed very small. Yes many say the 318 needs small ports to keep the velocity high but my 318 with the 360 heads seem just fine. I also looked at the Chevy 327 motors and the Fords boss 302's. They also had big ports and valves right from the factory. I recall seeing a few posts on maybe here or somewhere else saying that when they replaced the 302 high swirl heads with 360 heads, it was a 1/2 second faster in the quarter mile. No Mopar 318 4bbl police cars came with those 302 heads either. All had 360 heads.

I am starting to think its an old wifes tail that the 318 needs small ports. Just like the 318 can not run 2.02 intake valves without notching the bore-maybe it would help flow but I did not notch my bores and the valves did not hit--yet =P~
