How much more horsepower do you think is created when a stock 273 is changed to a Edelbrock LD4B manifold and a 500cfm carb. Hedman headers and dual SS exhaust?

Which one are you starting with? Factory 2 bbl or factory 4 bbl

without a cam change to exploit the free breathing, not much. 180 was stock on the 2bbl.

If you are a tuner you might, maybe, pick up 10 hp...........stock camshaft for a 190hp 273 is not going to pull a lot of air; at this point in it's; the engine; life, the springs are kinda soft, so it will pull even less..........not to be a downer, just a realist, a 4 bbl intake, carburetor, and headers do not guarantee lots of HP, just the possibility.....to get everything out of what you have, you need more camshaft and compression.

Okay thanks, the performance now seems like a lot more than 10hp. I will consider further modifications in the future.

You'll feel the difference.

Just the sound of the secondaries is worth it.

A factory 2 barrel engine has less compression, less cam and of course less carburetor. (ignition too) It was rated at 180 horse and I bet it put out around 150 or so. A 4 barrel intake, carb and duals might get you to the 180 but without more compression and a bigger cam no way you could get to the 235 horse the 4 barrel engine supposedly had.

Just adding the headers (much better breathing out) is a huge plus even on small mills. The added power up top is where the 4bbl. carb and intake win. (Better breathing in) Even over the old factory intake.

I say add a Mello cam in the 1200 - 5000 rpm range.

It was a factory 2bbl rated at 190hp/4400, 260ft-lb/2000

A never ending story. Yes it was 190hp back in 1967 ?, measured with SAE gross standards.
That should be converted into a measly 120hp measured SAE net (approximated from the 318 that
went from 230 gross to 150 net). Yeah that's gross.

120hp would be the power you can realistically compare to anything that moves on the streets today.

Edith sez: Gross measurements were taken without exhaust, any accessories or air cleaner... maybe
they hand-picked an engine for that. :)

Numbers don't matter, it will be a kick in the *** to drive it. At 60 MPH drop down a gear and floor it and hang on cause things will get real very quickly.

2 barrel pistons, 920 heads, OEM intake and Edelbrock 600 cfm, Headers, and an Isky E4 cam, 340 valve springs, and good machine work made 260+ HP built by someone who knows what they are doing. You won't know what hp you have till you run it at the track or put it on a dyno. It really does not matter. Enjoy!

Where did you get that 190HP... Canadian HP...like the Canadian Dollar?

SAE Gross Horsepower & Torque:
Std 273
======================================
180 @ 4200 RPM & 260 Ft/lbs @ 1600 RPM

273 Commando
======================================
235 @ 5200 RPM & 280 Ft/Lbs @ 4000 RPM

D/Stock 273
======================================
275 @ 6000 RPM & 295 Ft/Lbs @ 4400 RPM

180 or 190 depends on which site you google. Doesn't matter to me. Just wanted to know what the hp increase would be with the mods.

yeah, minimal without a cam, but it will breath better with that stuff for sure. It may rev faster but for HP, maybe a few but you may lose some torque. if you can find a 360 4bbl at a junkyard, grab the cam and lifters and rockers in order. Not a bad start for a 273 for pennies on the dollar.
