I'm on a 1/2 acre and used to have a whole acre......that was part of the problem. Coming down the road, it was easy to see my shop going up since the land beside me was vacant. I didn't own the other 1/2 acre when I built my shop but when I bought that piece of land, the naysayers went into full tilt assault. Had some fun years with them....not.
I don't get them. Do you have to wheel around on a chair?

Being 4' up is better than being 2' up.....imo.

I'm stuck with an 8' ceiling! Was trying to not build a monster because of what the deed restrictions say. I'm nearly 1500 sq ft and caught hell for that from the neighborhood watch dogs. Was already catching hell because I looked like a teenager when I bought my place (was 33) and to them I had to be a drug dealer to afford to live in this neighborhood. They would turn over in their graves if they saw the neighborhood now. There's even steel buildings out here that were built recently LOL. Build it to fit. 10' is good but 12' is even better. How tall are the 4 post lifts and how much more head room does a car need to be all the way up?

And I know all too well about how the wife is. Thing is, I don't have to worry about her anymore as she left in 17. Best thing that ever happened to me after 31 years of hell!

Yes,,,mine left 2 years ago,,,,,it was 35 years altogether .
Praise the Lord !!!

Until you have lived through something like this,,,you can’t explain it !
I’m doing better now than ever,,,,actually bought me a nice old car last year .
I’ve wanted to build a shop for 25 years,,(,since we bought here ).

Now it’s finally happening !
Yesss,
Praise the Lord !!!

I stored my box truck in a friend's garage for a bit. It's 12 1/2' tall, so his garage doors are at least 13 feet, and if his walls aren't 18' (or more!) I'll eat em.
(And his garage is 80% full, and he hasn't moved here yet.)
Build the biggest tallest garage you can afford!

I installed lifts for a living for a few years . 12’ at the minimum. If you ever need to work on a truck you will need 12’ . And when you sell the home it will pay for the extra cost .
Remember you have to walk below the lift to get in the lower car …. 12’ will give you plenty of head room . And if you get rolling jacks they will need the extra clearance.

Hi guys ,,I thought I would get some ideas before I get to the final stage where I have to make a decision .
I’m building a shop,,or I’m just beginning the stage of pouring concrete .

All my friends tell me I need at least a 12 foot ceiling if I plan to have a lift later .
I was planning on a 10 foot ceiling,,but I haven’t finished my plans yet .
They say to have a few trusses made with a cutout to clear the top and make it 12 foot clearance .
I don’t know if I will have a lift at all yet .

Any experience with this before,,,I’m willing to listen to the guys with any ideas .
Thanks .

Tommy
I built 2 garages. The minimum height on the Eve should be 14 feet. This way you can fit a 4 post extended height 4 post lift. With the taker lift you can fit a car under the lift. 12 feet will be too short. My other shop is 20 feet and you can build a mezzanine in that 20 footer for more space. No matter how big you build the garage you will run out of space:). Good luck.

The additional cost of increasing the height of the building will make it more attractive when you are looking to sell, it probably the cheapest way to increase your square footage.
I’ve owned a shop with a 12’ ceiling, I would consider that a minimum.
Increasing the height does not increase your square footage.

Disagree added a 1000sq of space with a mezzanine

You could do like I did. Mine is 36x40 and I went three blocks high with j bolts in concrete and plate is bolted to slab in 25 places. I have 10 ft high on each side and over 12 in center bay, If you want to look at my build search New shop build by red67gts, thanks Joe

Might want to check building codes for your area, township, county… Mine won’t allow an outbuilding roof peak to be taller than the first floor roof peak of the house on the property, or 14’-6”. And no pole barns or steel sided barns were allowed in my township , couldn’t be built forward of the house, couldn’t be more square feet than the first floor of the house, couldn’t be more than 1/3 of the property from the front wall of the house to the back property line (defined as backyard).

I put in a 2,400 sq ft brick carriage house that matches my house to shut up the neighbors that complained. And they still complained.

The higher, the better. I only have 10'-4". It's tight, but I make it work. I only have a 2 car garage, but I squeeze 3 cars in it for now. May increase it to 4 cars eventually with another hoist someday. I need to add out the back first though.

When I was a kid, I had a neighbor who built a new garage around the existing one, then tore down the existing one from inside. I don't remember what he did with the stuff inside while tearing down. He did it that way to beat the city's codes. He was a sharp dude. Not an easy answer, but he was determined!

Nice cars, I got rid of my 70 Challenger R/T in the early 80's, when it was "just another old muscle car".

I hope the OP goes for a higher ceiling. I don't think I've seen him post anything to that effect.

I’m planning on going with 12 if nothing changes .
I’m out in the country here and I’ve already checked with the county just to be certain .

I’m also the Chairman of the Zoning appeals board here,,,,so I can get information really quickly .

I might go higher,,,but I think 12 feet is probably okay for my needs ?
But,,,keep the ideas coming,,,,I’m still listening .

Good. It's easy for us to spend your money. At LEAST 12', since you're in the sticks. (There I go again.)

We didn't get a basement when we had our house built. I realize what a mistake it was EVERY time I have to go in that crawlspace. A rather costly addition, but it wouldn't matter whatsoever now.

Remember that you're going to want space for a lathe, mill, drill press, blasting cabinet, refrigerator for refreshments, computer desk and filing cabinet.
Compressor goes outside on it's own pad.
And a couch to sleep on, more comfortable than a creeper.

Yep,,,compressor gets its own room,,,will be in an addition after I get it all dried in .

Planning on having an area for some chairs for when my friends drop by to chat about car stuff .

Tommy

I just want to remind you a day is coming when you're gonna want to put up a full size van with/without roof racks, for whatever reason, - and you're gonna wish you added the 2 feet.
Been there . . . Didn't do it again .

Good luck
