I think the strongest instincts two of my dogs have is chasing cats (and rabbits). One is a poodle, the other a Doberman. Anyone have success in eliminating this unfriendly behavior in their own pets? Thank you.

Get a BIG cat! Actually when I was a kid we had a siamese cat that was very protective of the yard. One day a big black dog was trying to get in the trash cans in the alley and I noticed that the cat was stalking the dog. Next thing you know the cat is hanging on the dogs face kicking like mad with it's back claws and the dog is running down the ally howling and yipping. The next time that dog went down our alley it went carefully down the opposite side. Then I noticed that any other dog that came down our alley crossed to the other side near our house too. It doesn't really need to be a bigger cat....just a cat with a bigger attitude!

I had a BIG *** cat like that once that attacked people as well as any other animals.
That sucked.:D
Ended up blasting it all over the side of the house with my 300 magnum one day after it grabbed me by the leg and dug in with claws and teeth both because it wasn't done being petted.

Most cats are assholes! And most cats could woop most dogs. It's like comparing men and women. Men/Dogs are bigger and more powerful on average, but women/cats are absolutely insane when they get pissed off!

Btw, I'm a happily married, dog guy. Who also is highly allergic to cats. But that doesn't make what I said any less true...

Getting a bigger cat is not the answer in my case, the dogs chase the neighbors cats. Besides that, in the past they leave my cat alone *when I had one) , but chased any other cat.

have it chase mittens here, when it catching it, it will scare it straight

Just an idea, you could keep your dogs in your house and fenced yard, or on a leash when out. And your neighbor should keep his cats indoors, or at least out of your yard. No more cat chasing!

Try a training collar worked on mine here in the sticks chasing cats/ rabbits and deer! Only took a week of it.

The dogs have found the neighbors cats inside our fenced yard more than once, even killed some kittens in our back yard.

I had an old tom cat one time that hated dogs.
The neighbors had this huge old bull mastiff that stood at least 4' tall, the neighbor warned me that the dog hated cats.
I just took note of it, one day the dog wandered in my yard, I seen the cat fly around 20' in the air.
The last time I seen the dog it had a black cat attached to its rib cage, all 4 claws dug, the dog was whining like a baby running as fast as he could home.
The dog never came in my yard again.

i've seen a cat take a run at an 8 foot concrete wall (at the corner) and jump over it by bouncing from one side of the corner to the other side of the corner and then over the top (like spider man or some other super hero).

I have a female cat that can clear our 6ft cedar fence in one bound...
and a male cat that can barely et its feet off the ground ! Unless I toss a Tshirt from the second story that floats down thru the air like a ufo !
NOW THATS ENTRRTAINMENT !!! LOL

Buddy’s husky killed a few cats.
But they got into his dog run.
They had 2 cats too.
The cats knew the limits of his dog run/cable.

As he got older,he became friends with both cats.
Was strange...

Kinda like our old lab, he is getting up there in the years, and just don't care anymore, when he was younger he hated cats, now we have an inside cat and they get along fine.
The inside cat, is still young about a year old male, stray that adopted us last winter.
Apparently he liked fighting with everything in town, and was not too good at it, he always came in, beat up, hair missing, limping etc.
One day he came in with his eye half ripped out.
A trip to the vet to remove his eye and nuts calmed him down.

Gee...maybe properly train them not to?

Read everything you can on dog training and you will find that it isn’t that hard to do. It just takes work, consistency, and perseverance. Police dogs won’t bite a suspect until they are told to because they are properly trained. And even then, they stop on command for the same reasons.

Training is the answer. There are no short cuts.
