Can anyone tell me how to identify a slant six. I have a 1972 dodge dart swinger and I would like to find out if the slant six is the original one to the car but I don't know where to find the numbers. Any suggestions??

Check the car VIN to see if it's an original slant 6 car and then check the VIN on the motor to see if matches the car VIN.

Yes but, I believe what he is looking for is, where do you look on a 1972 slant block to find the stamped car vin number????

James, I came up with the fact it's stamped on the head surface of the block at the right front side of the block. And yes, if the block has been decked, it would most likely have machined the stamping off of it.

My 69 slant stamping is there, it's under the area where #1 spark plug location is on the block on the pass side. But my coli is mounted there and it's hard to read the whole number. See post #7 in this thread, it shows a picture. Kim:

It's straight down from the number 1 spark plug right where the valve cover meets the block behind the alternator bracket. It might be a little grimy and hard to see if it was like mine. Mine said xx 198 so it's a 198 slant. If it has the original engine yours being a 72 would only be a 198 or 225. They didn't make the 170 after 1970. :)

There's numbers hiding in your 3rd pic but I don't know what they mean. This pic is my 1969 225 block.

if it has the head and exhaust manifold on it. if you can pass the wide part of your thumb between the ext manifold and water pump casting it is a 225. the 170 is to close to pass your thumb thru.

LH23C2R is as follows:
L= Dart
H= High price range
23= 2 door hard top (Swinger)
C= 225 Slant 6
2= 1972 model year
R= Built in Windsor, Ontario
XXXXXX= the serial number of the car.

This is a damn neat way of telling the difference in the field! THANKS! No space its the 170, fit thumb in behind its the 225. what about the 198? Anything?

These motors are probably AFTER 1970, if not 1970 till the end of production run. SO........ I would assume the slant I'm looking for/at is actually a 198 or 225.....

They have 6 in a row and lean 30* towards the passenger's side of the car.
