How to tow an early A?

What if you towed the car backwards using a tow bar? .

No way in 'ell do you wan'ta do this. The front wheels are not meant to caster backwards, and I don't believe you would be able to secure them enough for a very long trip. MAYBE for a couple of miles at very low speeds


Careful, 65 904's had a rear pump that will energize when towed faster than 35 ( i think, supposedly you can push start these at 35) so pull with either the driveshaft disconnected or the rear tires raised and the steering wheel seatbelted stationary.

From what I've been taught, you need to pull the shaft on EITHER a stick or auto. Nothing to lube the trans, as not much is turning. I know of one 4 speed (left San Diego for Texas, I think) ended up welding the mainshaft to some of the other gears in the box.
