Has anybody tried the HP 70 or hp90 swap into there a body? I wanted to know what kind of electrical work needed to be done to do the conversion.

I'm assuming were talking the 8 speed auto that are put in the Charger/Challenger? If so chances are your going to need some sort of aftermarket controller at bare minimum.

The HP70 and HP90 are the 8spd auto transmissions that are in the new Dodge trucks and cars since 2014 for trucks 2015 for cars. ( the HP70 comes behind the 5.7 and 6.4 and the HP90 comes behind the 6.2 supercharged engines) From what I have heard there is two outfits that are making stand alone computers and wiring harnesses to run these transmissions, you will have to search the internet for them ( I can't remember the names of the two companies, sorry)

There are at least two build threads with that swap on here. @Dantra and @4.7Light.

Plus there a is a large thread discussing it.

Plug in "8HP", "8HP70" and/or "8HP90" into the search option at the top right and drink from the firehose.

There are a handful of controllers available on the marketplace to support this trans now. You can expect to pay about the same amount as an aftermarket EFI system just to control the 8HP, but it’s an awesome trans.

- Sound German Engineering
- Turbolamik
- MaxxECU
- FuelTech
- CANTCU

I’ve been following development in this area for a year or so and I gather that TurboLamik offers the most complete control and feature set. MaxxECU’s offering is interesting also because it is a full on EFI and 8hp controller in a single package.

I like the Turbolamik option because it can emulate a clutch. Not sure how much I would actually use that option though.

Isn't the MaxxECU one the guys swapped an 8HP into an S550 or something?

Yep. You’re right on both accounts. The Turbolamik also does Transbrake. Not sure about the others.

Russell Drake can do a trans brake as well. I like the sound German Automotive controller because I didn't have to open the transmission. Out of the box it works amazing and his support is 2nd to none. My Dart Sport with this transmission is terrifying fast. I have squared off with some expensive European cars AMG and others and embarrassed them. So much I limit driving the car now as I can't help myself hahaha.

Sounds like it was a worthwhile swap

Does anyone have a line on a flex plate solution for the 8HP70 to an LA motor? I know that @4.7Light used something that was being fabricated by a shop that is apparently no longer an option. I've seen people comment that a 6L60E plate can be drilled for the 8HP torque converter, but I haven't found a specific example of that actually being done. It's a little crazy to me that there is a solution like this out there that doesn't even require an adapter plate and there are so few people taking advantage of it. I'm picking up a low mileage transmission and torque converter this week out of a V8 R/T. I'm sorting through the options for controllers, but it's hard to justify double the price for the turbolamic vs the Sound German solution when I have no plans of converting to fuel injection. turbolamic does seem to support a lot more options in terms of shifters, but I don't think it's worth the price for me. I'll stick with a junkyard Dodge shifter for now. My only concern is that Sound German seems like it might be a lot more of a one man shop?

Just some personal experience....

Old cars are SO much lighter than the new tug-boats. They don't need 8 speeds. I put a 5-speed NAG1 in my `cuda with a 6.4, for that reason. It really doesn't need the 5, but that 3.50 low gear and over drives....can't beat it. Think semi-truck, weight, and transmissions.

Well, great, now I have another rabbit hole to go down.

So, I've been playing around with different transmission options a little bit. Maybe someone will find this interesting. Here's a spreadsheet I made so that I could compare different transmission and rear gear combos. I benchmarked them against a stock base model C8 Corvette.

After looking at lots of different options, I think I'm probably going to go with the 8HP70 for a few reasons.
  • I believe that my car already has a 2.7something rear gear and the ZF transmission pairs very nicely with that.
  • It seems that both the ZF and the NAG1 will require substantial cutting to fit.
  • The price seems like a wash. Cost of transmission, controller, shifter, etc. are likely within a couple hundred dollars.
Maybe I'm missing it, but I just don't see anywhere that I can point where the 5spd has an advantage for me.

It's tight but tunnel mods aren't too bad using the Hemi Denny Trans mount and Hemi Denny K with engine about 1 " forward. A lot of un-needed bosses need to be removed from the 8HP70.

Far as weight of the ZF it is comparable to a 727a like 40 more pounds. I assure you the 8 speed is not a tug boat or make the car slower and is not useless. That 727a compared to this is ridiculously different. My car usually beats 3 speed cars easily less they are a full 10 second car. They are to busy trying to stay on the power band or the cam. I no longer have that issue. The car can be mashed at 6 grand and won't stop till you take your foot off. The ratios for mine at least were perfectly matched. I did raise the base rpm and tunes from normal, is now basically track mode. The overdrive is crazy low rpm at 80 mph and you mash it computer drops a gear and your gone. I wouldn't mess with a nag1 when a zf8hp is actually an easier swap than I thought it would be. My main reason is I can autocross or dragstrip and the transmission needed no big modifications to do so. Flip to manual shift and this transmission actually shifts like a manual. I got bad hips so the six speed was out. Having had it for a while now I wouldn't change it to a six speed or the older nag1 Mercedes unit. They are putting these zfs in lighter cars besides old Darts and Dusters. It's actually a very good swap, ask Corvette owners doing it. Buddy of mine has the 5 speed swap auto in a 70 mustang grand. 550 hp 351C with a 4.10 gear. I eat that car alive first time he rode in the Dart he was shocked. Told me flat out this will beat my Mustang. He helped me swap it in after I did all the fab. He is now putting one in his car as he keeps chewing up Ford transmissions.

I was a little scared to start cutting pieces off transmission. I went for a roomy tunnel instead but I didn't move my engine forward. It stayed put in same location as before. Glad Denny got you setup he makes some amazing stuff.

This explains beautifully why I did the 8 speed swap and it's all 100 accurate.

Wish I had a better "ear to the ground", I hadn't heard anything about this till I saw that video. I just got done building & installing a 42RH. I added a drum from an A999 for extra clutch, better planetaries, Cope RMVB, etc, and built the O/D to 618 specs.
But Now, as @Jason B. says "Well, great, now I have another rabbit hole to go down."

I’d like to do the same and have been following developments in this Facebook group. A few folks have claimed Domi-Works is developing the flex plate adapter to go from sbm to 8hp but I haven’t seen it listed on their website yet.
