Most of you have some kind of classic car insurance, and the rates are very reasonable.

I have an old Plymouth, in a locked garage, and one under a carport behind a locked gate. Both have been insured for several years.

I recently bought a beater 64 Sport Fury, but I will have to park it outside (I was afraid this might be a problem). I called about getting insurance, and now they say they won’t even allow the car in the carport. The insurance is through Heacock Classic Insurance.

I’m not really concerned about the cost of the cars, but I need liability to drive. I can understand the insurance’s company point of view, but I’m more concerned with a low-cost alternative for me. Any ideas? Do you guys put all your old cars in a locked garage?

I have American National from Springfield MO. I don't recall anything about locked garage. My cars are in a garage. Don't know if they provide coverage in your state. Hagerty would not insure me they said because I drive too much.

    Hmm.
    I use Haggerty. No fuss.
I dont remember if there was a question about a locked garage.
Insured for their maximum value and all they needed were photos.

I will try the two companies you guys mentioned. And to Project Beep, how much was too many miles?

I just looked on the Web, and many companies say that while they a prefer a secure location, other locations (including just a driveway) may be acceptable.

    Now we're talking.

yup hagerty is good for me. Gave them the value I wanted to insure for. My policy does say I'll park it inside. They have a good magazine that comes with my policy too, added bonus.

Last year I switched from Farm Bureau to Berkley Classics- Luverne, MN. Just got a pile of policy terms for the renewal. They include: 1) must be stored in a fully enclosed structure....no carports or tarps. 2) Can only be driven by those with at least 10 years driving experience. 3) Cars can not be driven to work or for running errands. Primary use to be for car shows, club events, or an occasional pleasure drive only.

Yup, you're right. These guys are getting dumped.

I have State Farm with an agreed value on all of them. I have never once been asked or told how to store them.

          Hagerty.

years ago a friend allowed me to take pictures of my car in their 10x30 storage unit(2). I photos each car in a different unit so the id number was different. Never asked again for that. Hagerty and all classic car insurances are backing off on this procedure because they were loosing business.

Here in CT. If a car is over 20 years old it can get collector car plates. Over 25 they are antique plates. Both take car off normal property tax rolls and drop value to $500 which means about $15 dollars a year on property taxes vs. a couple of hundred. (Yes CT is tax haven) . It is also a reason for a person to insure as a classic car. But people where driving their 89 Square body Chevrolet or their 1986 Toyota As every day drivers. The state was losing revenue, and ALOT more insurance claims on cars not really a collector. Also these cars were being parked on side of the road or on a dirt driveway. Not the way a true collector car should be kept. Cheap insurance for low mileage driven cars was costing insurance companies a lot. So by instituting a few stipulations they prevent an old car from receiving the Benefits of “classic car” status.

I sure miss the big one I had , he always seemed to have my back , and didnt like any other dogs , and not many people.
Before he got sick, he`d take me for a walk , when people would stop and comment on how good looking he was for a rott. , he`d set there and growl at them if they were close to me . The smaller one now is part blue heeler and just as loyal , good dog, and likes everybody when I`m around , or he knows them.

If you are not concerned about the cost to repair the car, then insure it as a regular car.

I have some unconventional thoughts and practices involving insurance, mainly centering around "self insuring" against damage to my property rather than paying full coverage on anything (even new cars).

Instead I choose to put the difference in premium cost into a general "rainy day" account and then if the need arises, use that for any repair or replacement. that allows the money to stay mine instead of the insurance company's and allows it to be used for any vehicle and/or other emergency situation. (Sometimes even paying cash for a new or more likely 2 year old vehicle.)

With all that said, my 73 Satellite is the cheapest vehicle to insure that I own.

About 1/2 the cost of my 2000 Dakota and much less than my 2015 Renegade.

I have Hagerty. They said locked Garage. However, They didn't even want any photos when I bought my Challenger. That was a year ago.

I have Heacock (I always think it's some spin off He-Man porno...anyway) for my GTS and was told the same thing on my truck even though its park off the street beside my house and I drive it like 100 miles a year.

The bottom line may be cost but in the event a tree branch falls on it, hail damage, vandalism, theft etc., you will want your claim honored. With out the garage, well...
So far as tags go, in MD., 20 years and you can get Historic plates, DMV says you can only drive to events, parades or repairs. No daily, work, etc.
I have historic plates, Hagerty Ins. With an aggreed value, unlimited mileage, towing and membership.
My car is a beater, driver, work in progress. When I first applied to Hagerty, about 25 years ago, pictures of the car, garage were required. I set the value low and they agreed to cover it. Since then, the value has gone up and we agreed to raise the coverage. They said that they may ask for updated photos to verify that the car is being restored and not just driven. So far they have not, nor have they asked for an update of the odometer reading.
I like hagerty, the premium is reasonable and they are good people. I have missed my annual payment before and called them, as long as I didn't get in an accident during that time they renewed it, with no lapse in coverage.

I tried to get everything I own under one insurance company a while back and since my house and regular cars are with State Farm it seemed like the place for my toys. They required photos of each vehicle and photos of the cars in their storage spot. The lady I was dealing with told me the cars could only be used for parades, car shows and organized sanctioned or club events. When I asked her if I could drive one to get breakfast on a sunny Sunday morning or a quick trip to the parts store she told me "only parades, car shows and organized sanctioned or club events. No regular personal use." I kind of pressed her on that so she phoned the State Farm Collector Car expert and had me ask him on speaker phone. He told me that if I had a claim and could not produce documentation that I was going to, coming from or attending a parade, car show, organized cruise etc. it would probably be considered personal use and the claim would likely be denied. So much for that idea! I use Hagerty now and they seem pretty good. No claims yet (knock on wood) but others I know have had claims handled to their satisfaction. I did have to provide the storage location for each car when I signed them up.

I tryed Hagerty no good for me.

They will only insure the car WHEN it is locked inside my shop basically.

Stay at the girlfriend's house, not covered.

Stay at a hotel on a road trip, not covered.

Branch falls on the car when parked at the ice cream shop, not covered.

If the car is parked and its out side you are not covered.

Maybe you fib and say the car lives inside when it dont.

Thats insurance fraud and a big company like them loves to not pay out so yeah Hagerty wont be getting any of my money.

I have Hagerty and they ask about if in a garage. I told them no, did not matter I guess, I use them and have for years. IF I called with hail damage they might ask if it was parked in my yard or down the highway when that hail hit!!! Dunno!!!
